Tyson Fury Refuses To Sack His Father John Fury – ‘Panicky And It’s All Over The Place’
Tyson Fury has agreed to let his father, John Fury, continue in the corner for his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury lost a split decision to Usyk, who became the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion. While there will be a rematch on December 21, much has been said about Fury’s set-up in the defeat. He had his lead trainer, SugarHill Steward, Andy Lee and his father, John. During the break between rounds, all three could be heard giving instructions.
Fury Criticism
John was dominating the exchanges, leading to much criticism. Fury admitted that he would have shown more urgency if his corner told him he was losing. John drew a lot of backlash, with many calling on him to leave Fury’s corner. One of those who was vocal about the set-up was Peter Fury. Peter had trained Tyson before, and it was clear that there had to be one voice. Carl Froch was also critical of the way the corner was operating.
“When you’ve got three people – including Big John Fury the fighting man – when you’ve got him in the corner shouting and screaming at you while you’ve got two other people giving you advice, that means you’re listening to absolutely nobody. I thought that was terrible and really unprofessional in his corner. It was bad,” Froch
“There should only be one man in the corner, there shouldn’t be three or four. Some are too emotional in the corner and some are giving the wrong advice. I think the only one that spoke a little bit of sense in the last dying stretch of it was SugarHill, who said ‘put it on him.
“There were too many people, but maybe Tyson wants that? I don’t know, it’s been years since dealing with me. I don’t know what the situation is but clearly for me the game plan was wrong and only one should be speaking. How can you listen to all that? It’s going a bit panicky and it’s all over the place,” Peter Fury
John Fury To Continue
However, Fury’s manager (Spence Brown) has said things will continue as usual. That does not bode well for Fury. He has already shown difficulties in accepting the defeat. After the Usyk loss, he felt the Ukrainian got the decision due to the Russia-Ukraine war. In addition, Fury refused to accept defeat even after watching it back. His brother, Shane Fury, has come out to state that Tyson had lost.
Unless the Gypsy King accepts defeat, he will face major struggles in trying to develop a game plan that can beat Usyk. Another loss for Fury will increase the calls on him to retire. Meanwhile, it damages the hopes of British fans who want to see Fury take on Anthony Joshua. But one thing Fury has shown is that he rises to the occasion. Brown expects him to be better.
“There’ll be changes, not in management or his team, there’ll be some other stuff that he’ll be looking at training-wise. With the closeness of the fight last time, it could have gone either way. Some people will say Usyk was three rounds in front, some people won’t, it’s your opinion on boxing – that’s why we love it. But Tyson Fury will be back. He’ll be firing and we’ll see a new, better, improved Tyson Fury,” Brown stated
