Tyson Admits 'Blanking Out' In Jake Paul Fight

Mike Tyson says he blanked out during his fight with Jake Paul

Tyson faced off against Paul on November 15 in an eight-round professional fight. The 58-year-old was having his first boxing fight since 2005, when he lost to Kevin McBride. The fight was heavily criticized based on safety concerns. Tyson was three decades older than the 27-year-old Paul. Meanwhile, Tyson also pulled out of the initial July 20 date because of an inflamed ulcer. Mike later said that he felt he could have died after that incident. Tyson also wore a compression sleeve on his knee, which came out after the bout was over. Tyson looked far from a pro boxer, as he was getting outboxed by Paul, who won a comfortable unanimous decision.

While the fight did not live up to expectations, it still did record-breaking numbers. 108 million viewers across the globe watched it on Netflix. It also set a new live gate record of over $18 million for an event outside of Las Vegas. Tyson also said in his post-fight comments that he could not say whether he would retire or fight again. Iron Mike even called out Jake’s brother, Logan Paul, who was in the ring. But Tyson has now said that the event was a blur. He also admitted that he could not understand why he took that fight, especially given how his body reacted in the aftermath.

Tyson Reacts

“I don’t remember the fight that much, I kind of blanked out a little. I remember coming back from the first round, and Jake is doing some kind of, I don’t know what he was doing [a bow]. That’s the last thing I remember.” He continued, “I don’t remember [the fight]. But my body was really sore [afterward]. My chest, and my stomach was really sore… The day after I woke up, I said to my wife ‘Why did I do that?’. I just don’t know what the hell was going on,” Tyson said

Nevertheless, the event was not a disaster for Tyson. He got out of the ring in one piece and avoided taking a lot of punishment. Evander Holyfield, in contrast, made a return in 2021 when he faced off against Victor Belfort. Holyfield was hit numerous times as he dropped to the canvas in the first round. The referee eventually intervened to stop the fight. Tyson did not experience anywhere near that amount of punishment. However, Oscar De La Hoya, stated that the fight was scripted.

But Tyson walked away with a reported $20 million guaranteed purse. This is without any additional sponsorship money that Iron Mike may have made. It is also a huge amount of money for only having eight rounds, which were two minutes each. And this significant amount of money is more than what most boxers would ever make in their careers. Despite this, boxing fans had plenty to say about Tyson’s comments.
