Anthony Joshua has survived a horrific car accident that claimed the lives of two people on Monday.

The former two-time unified heavyweight champion was traveling along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when his Lexus SUV slammed into a parked truck in the Makun area of Ogun State. While the 36-year-old superstar escaped the wreckage with minor injuries, officials confirmed the heartbreaking news that two other passengers were killed instantly upon impact.

Rescue workers and witnesses described a devastating scene on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways. Adeniyi Orojo, an eyewitness who rushed to the vehicle to help, described the aftermath of the collision as a “full horror.” Reports from the scene indicate that the truck was stationary at the time of the crash.

Local authorities have since cordoned off the area and launched a formal investigation to determine what caused the fatal impact. The accident comes just ten days after Joshua’s high-profile win against Jake Paul in Miami on December 19. Joshua had traveled to the country to spend the holidays and celebrate his recent victory with family and friends.

Crash

“It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash. Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. A few minutes after the crash, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. The passenger beside the driver and Joshua died on the spot,” Adeniyi Orojo said

The following pictures show the damage that was sustained in the tragic accident.
