Trump Praises Poirier For UFC 302 Performance – ‘Real Recognize Real’
Donald Trump has praised Dustin Poirier for his performance against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302.
Poirier suffered a fifth-round stoppage loss as he missed out on the UFC Lightweight Title. It was another disappointing end to a title fight after having previously come up short against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in 2019 and Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 in 2021 for the lightweight belt.
Justin Gaethje also knocked out Dustin at UFC 291 as he missed out on the BMF Title. After his loss, Dustin said he would consider retiring if he could not fight for a world title. He then suggested he may carry on fighting, suggesting possible bouts with Nate Diaz or Conor McGregor. He even teased the idea of crossing over into boxing. Dustin has now said he will decide this month, leaving Trump to praise him.
Trump On Poirier
“Oh he’s great, boy I’ll tell you he’s a warrior. Whether you like him or not, he’s a warrior. No, he didn’t lose that fight. He really, man, his fight was tough. He was tough and I didn’t expect that same fight. [Poirier] makes people suffer, there’s no question about that. He’s a pro, he’s a professional.
“As that fight went along, he just got stronger and stronger. He was getting pounded and was going to be choked out four different times and he just wouldn’t let it happen. Man, he’s good, he’s a really great fighter,” Trump said
Trump has also praised one of Dustin’s former opponents, Khabib. Trump met Khabib at UFC 302. Nurmagomedov confronted Trump about the possibility of ending the Israel-Palestine war. Trump promised to do what he could to resolve the situation. The former President praised Khabib for his career, labelling him as the GOAT.
Khabib retired with a 29-0 record, beating the big names, including Porier, Gaethje and McGregor. His last bout was a win over Gaethje at UFC 254 in 2020. The Russian retired at the top of his game, promising his mother that he would not fight again following the passing of his father. Dana White has often called Jon Jones the greatest ever. However, for Trump, Khabib was above the rest.
“Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retired after a RECORD of 29-0, never having lost even a single round, is probably the Greatest Fighter of All Time. I met him at the UFC event on Saturday night in New Jersey. A really smart guy – Big things in the future for Khabib,” Trump stated
