Thurman Opens Up On His Next Move

November 15, 2023

Keith Thurman opened up about his time away from the ring, as the former unified welterweight champion continues to struggle with inactivity and injuries.

Thurman’s last fight occurred in 2022 when he beat Mario Barrios via a unanimous decision.

While that may have been the case, that fight was three years after he had lost to Manny Pacquiao.

That was hardly the preparation that Thurman needed as ‘One Time’ aims to get back to the top of the division.

And given that Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford continue to dominate the division, as they square off for an undisputed bout on July 29th, 2023, it has left Thurman with a lot to think about.

While that may be the case, Thurman has been linked with a WBC title eliminator against Yordenis Ugas.

If such a fight were to happen and Thurman came out victorious, he would be in line to face the winner of Spence and Crawford.

Or better yet, Thurman would become elevated to the status of a full champion if the winner of Spence and Crawford vacated. But for now Thurman’s next move remains to be seen.

Thurman’s Comments

“Ugas was one of the things on the table. Of course. I’ve already agreed to a plethora of fights. Thurman’s a yes man. ‘Yes, I’ll fight him. We just got to create the ‘when’ and the ‘where.’ I don’t know what’s going on the other people’s sides.

“I was a bench boy this year. It’s a horrible position to be in. [I] could have fought in February. They were trying to mandate Spence. He wiggled his way out of that. He made a big fight happen. I cannot be mad about that. The fans have been waiting for this fight. Nobody’s mad at this decision,” he said

Ultimately, the sooner Thurman gets active the better it is for the welterweight division. And if things do pan out in his favor, ‘One Time’ could have a title shot in the near future. Time will tell.
