The Winner Of Berlanga Vs. Mungia Could Face Canelo – Says Hearn

Eddie Hearn has revealed that the winner of a potential fight between Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Mungia could face Canelo Alvarez

A fight between  Berlanga and Mungia had been in the offing for some time following the former’s win over Jason Quigley. However, differences with promotional companies did hinder that progress.

Berlanga is a Matchroom fighter, while Mungia is with Golden Boy. Although Hearn and Oscar De La Hoya do have agreements with DAZN, the latter was not too happy with seeing Mungia potentially facing Berlanga.

This was in addition to the general war of wards that De La Hoya put out against Hearn following Canelo’s decision to sign a three-fight deal with the PBC.

But now De La Hoya’s willingness to make the fight happen has gone down well with Hearn.

Hearn’s Comments

“It was nice, wasn’t it? All of a sudden, he wants to make a fight. He wants to make the fight because DAZN wants to make the fight, and we’ve already been talking to Golden Boy for a number of weeks about Berlanga against Munguia,” Hearn

Nevertheless, getting that fight with Canelo may not be that easy. PBC has shown a reluctance to work with Matchroom and DAZN in the past which may prove problematic.

Although that may be the case, Hearn felt that Canelo’s pulling power could ultimately prove too much if the Mexican demanded such a fight.

And since Canelo has a good working relationship with Hearn, having fought on DAZN numerous times, the fight could happen.

“Yeah, you can always do a deal with PBC. If PBC don’t have an opponent that Canelo accepts. If Canelo doesn’t agree to certain terms and leaves PBC, I tell you what. The Munguia-Berlanga winner is absolutely nailed on to fight Canelo Alvarez. It’s a massive fight,” Hearn

In reality, Canelo is in a position where he can pick and choose his fights. And since he is a four-division champion with nothing else left to prove in the sport, the Mexican has plenty of options moving forward.
