The WBC Gives Haney More Time To Decide His Future

The WBC has granted Devin Haney more time, specifically until July 27th, 2023, to decide his next move going forward.

The undisputed lightweight champion must make a decision over whether or not he should stay at 135 pounds or move up to junior welterweight.

If Haney stays at lightweight, then he would have to face his WBC mandatory Shakur Stevenson who has been calling him out.

The latter has also written to the WBO to make him a mandatory in that regard, as Stevenson chases more than one belt in the weight class.

However, if Haney were to move up to 140 pounds, then a fight with Regis Prograis could follow. With that being said, the WBC has had this to say about it.

“The WBC Board of Governors has granted the petition by both Regis Prograis and Devin Haney until next Thursday 27 July,” WBC stated

This naturally begs the question: which fight is more realistic? Well, Haney’s offer to Stevenson came in the form of 25 percent.

Although that was the case, the offer has been knocked back since then. This was on the grounds that Stevenson felt the money did not reflect his worth.

In contrast, Eddie Hearn has confirmed that an offer has been made for a fight between Haney and Prograis.

The latter two fighters had a back-and-forth on social media, increasing speculation that a fight could happen later down the line. As a result, this is what Hearn had to say about it all.

“We’ve made an offer to Devin and Bill Haney. I think we’re close on that fight. I spoke to Devin tonight, I’m seeing him in Los Angeles this week… Devin wants that fight with Regis Prograis, it’s a massive fight for DAZN,” Hearn said

Haney is at a crossroads in his career, making his next move even more crucial. And given that he is unbeaten, Haney is in prime position to call the shots. But a loss to either Stevenson or Prograis would set the dream some way back.
