Teofimo Lopez Calls Out Tank Davis - 'I Beat Him, I'm The Takeover'

Teofimo Lopez has called out Gervonta Davis for his next fight.

Lopez’s comments came after reports that Davis could headline a PBC card featuring David Benavidez as the co-main event in December. Reports indicate that Davis’ next opponent is likely between Edwin De Los Santos or Jose Valenzuela. De Los Santos suffered a unanimous decision defeat against Shakur Stevenson in his last fight for the vacant WBC Lightweight Title. Meanwhile, Valenzuela is coming off a victory against Isaac Cruz to win the WBA Junior Welterweight Title.

Now, Lopez wants to throw his name into the hat. The Takeover is the WBO champion at 140, having beaten Steve Claggett in his last fight to retain the title. After his win, Lopez hinted at a possible move up to 147 as he wanted Terence Crawford. However, Crawford is currently at 154, meaning the fight would be tough to make. Davis previously fought at 140, having beaten Mario Barrios. If Tank is considering Valenzuela, Lopez wanted that smoke instead.

Lopez On Tank

“Hey, Tank, give me a fight, brother. He ain’t fighting, I ain’t fighting. What’s up? I don’t like people saying I’m ducking somebody. Why do I beat him? Because I’m the takeover, that’s why,” Lopez said

Lopez’s pedigree is undeniable. He has faced the biggest names in the sport and upset the odds. He has wins over Vasiliy Lomachenko, Richard Commey and Josh Taylor, who was undisputed at 140. Those wins have made Lopez a two-weight and two-time lineal champion with a better resume than Davis. However, unlike Davis, Lopez is not a big commercial star. He struggled to sell the Taylor fight in his hometown. Lopez is also accused of demanding unrealistic purses, meaning that he is the B-side in most talks for the big fights.

Lopez’s Alternative

However, there is another option. Ryan Garcia called out Lopez for a fight once his boxing ban is over. Garcia received a year ban after testing positive for Ostarine. His win over Devin Haney was turned into a no-contest, reversing what was his biggest victory. Garcia is eligible to box from April 2025 onwards, as he wanted the biggest fights on his return. A fight with Lopez could happen at 147 or a catchweight over 140. Teo has previously expressed his desire to take that fight. But he revealed that he turned it down after not being offered enough.

“When you’re the best, when you are the guy, when you bring major sponsors, endorsements, big major business deals, when you offer me a 1.5 [million dollars] stake in the piece…So yeah I declined the offer,” Lopez revealed

Lopez is pulling out all the stops to be the best. He was recently seen sparring with Canelo Alvarez ahead of the latter’s fight with Edgar Berlanga. Reports indicate that Lopez could join Canelo’s trainer, Eddie Reynoso. Once again, that move would help Lopez acquire knowledge from the best fighter in the sport, only aiding his desire to become the top name in boxing. A win over Tank would go some way in helping him achieve that.
