Teofimo Lopez Calls Himself The Best At 140
Teofimo Lopez sees himself as the best fighter in the 140-pound division.
Lopez, the current WBO junior welterweight champion, beat Josh Taylor to pick up the belt. He beat the former undisputed champion to become the lineal and two-weight world champion. Lopez faces competition to be the best from Devin Haney and Subriel Matias in the 140-pound division. Haney has the WBC belt, while Matias is the IBF champion.
Although Rolando Romero holds the WBA belt, he is seen as the weakest out of the top three. Lopez’s resume is arguably the best out of the champions at 140. He has wins over Vasiliy Lomachenko, Taylor and Richard Commey. But Haney has managed to achieve something that Lopez never did. That is to become undisputed, without controversy, when he beat George Kambosos Jr. to claim all the belts at 135 pounds. But Lopez set himself apart from the rest of the division.
Lopez On The Division
“We got Tefoimo as #1. Devin Haney is #2, [Subriel] Matias is #3, Rolando Romero is #4, [Ismael] Barroso is #5, and Ryan Garcia is #6. He still has to work his way up. You got to work your way up. Even though you are the star power and everything, you still got to win a world title in my eyes in order to say that you are in that rank. Let’s say that so I can build this Haney fight, yeah,” said Teofimo when asked if this is the order of fighters that he feels could challenge him the most,” Lopez said
That has set up the narrative for a unification against Devin Haney to decide who is the best in the division. Lopez will face Jamaine Ortiz on February 8, 2024, during Super Bowl week in the first defense of his WBO title. He is expected to win, given that Ortiz has his first fight at 140 pounds after moving up from lightweight.
Ortiz is currently working with Haney’s father, Bill Haney, which adds another intriguing element to the fight. Following Lopez’s decision to call out Terence Crawford, Bill urged him to fight Devin. That is unlikely since Crawford shut down Lopez’s call out by telling him to focus on becoming the best in his weight class. Bill and Lopez then traded words over a fight in the future.
Lopez Vs. Haney
“Teofimo Lopez, if you don’t knock it off, talking about you want Bud Crawford. I just seen you and your daddy, and I yelled, ‘Why didn’t we offer you $20 million.’ So you can imagine what you’d be talking about to fight Bud Crawford. Listen, act like you got some sense. You hear that money counter in the background.
“Act like you got some sense, and we can make Haney vs. Lopez for that 140-pound unification. Yeah, baby. Act like you got some sense, and stop talking about Bud Crawford. You don’t want none of Bud Crawford, and you don’t deserve none. Knock it off, talk like you got some sense,” Bill said
“The Haney’s are now on the radar! It’s about damn time. One fight at a time baby! One fight at a time,” Lopez stated
