Tarver And Malignaggi React To Charlo’s Loss To Canelo

In some recent boxing news, Antonio Tarver has backed Terence Crawford to put up a better fight than Jermell Charlo if Bud does fight Canelo Alvarez.
Those comments were made in the aftermath of Charlo’s loss as the American was completely outclassed in a unanimous-decision loss.
Although that may have been the case, Charlo did earn a moral victory in lasting the distance at 168 on his debut against the undisputed champion.
However, the lack of firepower coming from Charlo is not something that Tarver felt Crawford would do. He backed the undisputed welterweight champion to make it more competitive.
Tarver On Charlo
“I think it’s going to be a much better fight, and it’s going to be more competitive, and I think that outcome is up for grabs. It depends on if Canelo’s size has the same effect that it affected Charlo that it would affect Bud that way, but I think Bud is a different animal, a different beast. So I’ll be interested in seeing pound-for-pound versus pound-for-pound. I definitely would,” Tarver said
Charlo’s Tactics
In addition to this, Tarver suggested that Charlo was more interested in not getting badly hurt rather than trying to gain a win. This was understandable since it was Charlo’s first fight in 14 months, in addition to the fact that he had recently broken his hand. Therefore, there was a danger that he could have taken extensive damage had he fully exchanged with Alvarez.
“Yeah, he definitely got on the bicycle tonight, and he didn’t want to get knocked out. When you’re trying to be assertive and get the win, you’ll see more aggression, a little more aggression,” said Antonio Tarver to Fighthype, talking about Jermell Charlo being timid against Canelo Alvarez. “Could have counterpunched a little bit but just didn’t want to stay there for no time and left Canelo get a shot off after he felt that power. He knew that he didn’t want to get hit with that. Of course,” Tarver
Malignaggi On Charlo
Those comments were also echoed by Paulie Malignaggi, who accused Charlo of simply fighting for a payday. There is no denying that Canelo is a cash cow of the sport, which would then also potentially allow Charlo’s brother, Jermall Charlo, to face him.
While boxing is a sport where boxers are prize fighters, anything short of 100 percent motivation in the sport could comeback to haunt fighters. And even if Charlo did not take too much punishment, Malignaggi felt that he was there just for a payday.
“Charlo hasn’t made a committed effort to try to win this fight all night. He showed up for a check and is fighting like a guy more focused on not getting hurt than he is to win,” Malignaggi stated
Outside of a Bud fight, there was the chance that David Benavidez may finally get his shot at the title. The Mexican Monster has been the WBC mandatory to Canelo for over a year.
The failure to fight Benavidez by choosing Charlo suggested that Alvarez may have been ducking the fighter. Although that may be the case, Canelo did state in the aftermath of the fight that ‘none one’ could beat him on this form. That would set up the narrative for a Benavidez fight since the Mexican Monster is also undefeated.
“So he kind of. If you want a super fight, that’s the one to make, and I’m not saying Benavidez won’t be an exciting fight I like that fight, too I’m not going to frown on either one of those, Benavidez or Crawford. If he [Canelo] wants to fight somebody in his weight class, Benavidez still has Boo Boo [Andrade]to worry about [on November 25th]. He has his hands full already,” Tarver said
