Tank Davis' Trainer Hints At Loma Fight In November - 'Chenko Will Be Destroyed'

Gervonta Davis‘ co-trainer Kenny Ellis has hinted that his fighter could box Vasily Lomachenko on November 24.

Bob Arum recently confirmed that talks over a fight have already begun, with a view to making it at the back end of the year. This would require PBC and EPSN to work together in a cross-party promotion. Davis is represented by PBC, who recently signed a deal with Amazon Prime Video. Meanwhile, Loma fights on ESPN. The fight is well past its due date. Davis is at his peak, having knocked out Frank Martin in his last fight. The victory meant he retained his WBA Lightweight Title.

After the win, Loma’s name was mentioned alongside Shakur Stevenson for his next fight. Now, it appears Loma is the front-runner. Lomachenko recently became the IBF Lightweight Champion. The 36-year-old may no longer be at his peak, but he dominated George Kambosos Jr. to win the vacant title, stopping him in round 11.

Talks Begin

The fight is likelier to happen, given the increasing competition posed by the Saudis. They are working with Matchroom Boxing and Queensbury Promotions to put on the biggest fights. This has put pressure on other promoters to do the same, as fans now have choice in abundance. Arum is confident a fight will happen.

“I’m optimistic that will happen but until it’s signed, you don’t know. The networks are cooperative. You can’t blame the networks if a fight isn’t made. It’s people involved with the fighters who are not being realistic, but I don’t think that will be the case. I think the negotiations will go very well between the sides.

“This is the time that it can be made, and both are coming off big victories. So, it’s all good. At a particular other time, would the fight have meant more? I don’t know. Maybe, but you can’t look back at that. We’re at this time in the careers of both guys and it’s a very interesting, intriguing fight. Both fighters want the fight,” Arum said

When It Could Happen?

Despite this, there is an argument that the Shakur fight is more competitive. Stevenson is in his prime and holds the WBC Lightweight Title. That also allows Davis to unify. But Davis’ trainer Ellis has already begun studying the Ukrainian with the view to making a game plan. That increases the likelihood of the fight getting made.

It is an intriguing match-up, especially since questions remain over how much Lomachenko has left in the tank. He was dominating the sport five years ago. However, defeats to Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney showed that he had slowed down. While the loss to Haney was controversial, it most likely ended his hopes of becoming undisputed at 135, given his age. Ellis expects Davis to stop Lomachenko should they face off.

“Chenko will be destroyed. 11-24,” Ellis

“Phase 3 Studying Lomachenko: Why all of a sudden are these Lomachenko highlight videos popping up? Are they supposed to be intimidating or something? He won’t see the 12th with Gervonta Davis,” Kenny Ellis said
