Tank Davis And Benavidez Could Fight On The Same Card
Gervonta Davis and David Benavidez could fight on the same card in a mega card for PBC following their deal with Amazon Prime.
Both fighters have not been in the ring since last year following their impressive wins. Tank Davis stopped Ryan Garcia in the seventh round to secure the biggest win of his career. The fight sold over 1.3 million PPVs, becoming the highest grossing event of 2023.
Since then, Davis has had to contend with legal trouble. He was arrested for violating the terms of his house arrest in relation to a hit-and-run incident. But now is expected to face Frank Martin, an undefeated fighter in his next bout in June.
Davis vs Martin
“Gervonta Davis and Frank Martin have agreed to a deal for a PBC PPV fight in late spring/early summer for Tank’s WBA lightweight title, sources tell ESPN. Davis’ legal trouble sidelined him the second half of last year, but now he’s back vs. a legitimate top 10 lightweight. And for Martin, it’s the sort of big fight he was looking for after he passed up the Shakur Stevenson opportunity in the fall. Tank and Martin both undefeated, and both are athletic punchers. Of course, Davis one of the biggest stars in boxing,” Mike Coppinger said
Benavidez is coming off an impressive win over two-weight world champion Demetrius Andrade. The Mexican Monster knocked out ‘Boo Boo’, increasing the calls on him to fight Canelo Alvarez. So far, nothing indicates that the Alvarez fight will happen. Canelo and PBC parted ways, only for reports to stress that PBC are now willing to make Canelo vs Jaime Munguia with a view to it being on Amazon Prime. That has left Benavidez with no choice but to look for alternatives.
He could move up to 175 pounds to take on Oleksandr Gvozyk for the WBC Interim Light Heavyweight Title. A victory gives Benavidez the mandatory postion to take on the winner of Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev for the right to become undisputed. The latter two boxers fight for all the belts on June 1. If that does happen, it reduces the chances of Benavidez returning to fight Canelo.
Benavidez at 175
“Very proud to announce a sensational fight which the @WBCBoxing has approved to sanction for the interim Lightheavyweight championship Benavidez vs Gvozdyk . Wish the best of luck for both champions,” Mauricio Sulaiman WBC President stated
“Him parting ways with PBC, even though this fight was on the table, it just speaks volumes. I’m not going to be waiting on Canelo. The reason why this fight is not happening is because Canelo doesn’t want it to happen, plain and simple. I don’t need Canelo. The only reason people fight Canelo is for a payday. I don’t care about money. I care about winning titles and giving the fans the best fights possible. The thing I cared about was the opportunity because I know once I beat him, that’s when the money comes,” Benavidez stated
