WBC junior welterweight champion Subriel Matias boxes Dalton Smith on January 10, 2026, as fans picked their winner.

Matias makes his first defense since securing the belt against Alberto Puello via a majority decision in July 2025. The result was the first time the champion had won when going the distance. Meanwhile, Smith solidified his mandatory challenger status after a first-round TKO of Walid Ouizza and a unanimous decision win over Mathieu Germain.

The road to this clash was briefly in jeopardy following an “atypical finding” in Matias’ VADA drug test for Ostarine. However, the champion was cleared to proceed after the WBC and the New York State Athletic Commission confirmed the levels were below the threshold for punishment.

Pre-Fight

“It’s a great fight, and Subriel is a tremendous fighter, but it’s just the perfect style for Dalton Smith. He’s a master boxer, great footwork, and he punches very hard. I think he’ll stop Subriel Matias late in the fight. Matias has a huge heart, but this is a great style for Dalton Smith. But it’s not going to be easy,” Eddie Hearn said

“It’s the first time I’m going into a fight as the challenger and an underdog at that, but I’m excited. People saying he’s at home, got the benefit of his own fans and judges there but I can’t worry about it. I just need to be the best Dalton Smith, leave the rest to the judges because it’s out of my control, so why stress over that?

“I’m investing more into my camps now, flying people overseas for sparring and I’ll do that again once we get a date locked in, guys to replicate Subriel’s style. I know you’ll never get the perfect style but work with what you get, just prepare as best you can,” Smith revealed

“I’m gonna bring out the little girl he has inside him. Remember, I’m a real champion. This is real and you’re gonna see that on January 10th. Don’t run,” Matias stated
