Stevenson On The Frank Martin Fight Collapsing – ‘He Said 50/50 Or Nothing’

Shakur Stevenson has opened up on the reasons as to why his fight with Frank Martin collapsed.

The pair were expected to face each other for the vacant WBC lightweight belt. This was after Devin Haney had been stripped following his move up t0 140 pounds.

And in what would have been a tale of two undefeated fighters, the bout would have proved an interesting match up. Despite reports that terms had been agreed, a last minute change from Martin’s side meant that the fight was called off.

And now it appears that the finances involved were not acceptable for Martin.

“Frank say if he not getting 50/50 with me he ain’t fighting. He said 50/50 or nothing,” Stevenson

Those comments do raise numerous points over who is the A-side. Although both fighters have never tasted defeat, Shakur is a two-division world champion.

Titles at featherweight and super featherweight have placed him as one of the best stars in boxing. In contrast, Martin has never won a world title. This would make it harder for the fighter to command an equal split.

And yet, he has had more fights at 135 unlike Shakur who has only fought Shuichiro Yoshino. Regardless of what the case may be, this is creating obstacles for Shakur moving forward.

A fight with Haney never happened after Shakur rejected a 25 percent offer on the basis that it did not reflect his worth. Meanwhile, a bout with Vasiliy Lomachenko was ruled out after Bob Arum confirmed that the Ukrainian would not be fighting this year.

“I met with Egis before he went off to Poland for the Usyk fight. We tried to make the fight between Shakur and Loma. And Egis told us that Loma has decided that he’s not fighting again this year. So, the fact that they’re talking about a fight with Loma and Kambosos is nonsense. Egis would not mislead us, and he told us that Loma wants to take the rest of the year off,” Arum said

Ultimately, Stevenson must remain active. But this is proving harder than first thought. You can stay up-to-date with the latest happenings in the world of boxing and MMA by visiting boxingblitz right here.
