Spence Vs. Crawford Predictions

Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford’s bout has gotten many people talking with the predictions coming out.

The two undefeated fighters face each other on July 29th, 2023, in the biggest fight in boxing this year.

The winner will become the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era and go down as the greatest welterweight of his generation.

The consensus going into the bout is that either fighter could win, but Crawford has been given the edge with the bookies.

The two contrasting styles have divided the boxing fan base. Spence’s high work rate and volume punching have suggested that he could break down Crawford.

However, the latter’s ability to switch between orthodox and southpaw, as well as counter, has thrown up another dynamic.

Roach On Crawford

But for some, the choice has been made clear over who will come out victorious. Legendary trainer Freddie Roach stated that Crawford’s ability to change his game plan will be key.

After all, ‘Bud’ demonstrated this when he beat Shawn Porter. As soon as the WBO welterweight champion realized that he was behind on the scorecards, he responded by stopping Porter. And that ability could be key.

“I have Crawford. I like him; he’s a friend of mine, he’s a good person, and he goes out there with his game plan. He might turn southpaw or righty in the second out, and then he carries through.

“I like him a lot. I think he’s one of the best fighters in the world today. I think he’s thoughtful, and he counter-punches really well. His opponent [Spence] is there aggressive, and he’s had a tough life over the last year,” Roach stated

Postol Backs Crawford

Much in the same way, Bud’s former opponent, Viktor Postol, has backed Crawford to stop Spence in dramatic style.

Postol faced Crawford all the way back in 2016, having been beaten by unanimous decision as Bud won the Ukrainian’s WBC junior welterweight title.

That was key as it allowed Crawford to become undisputed champion at 140 pounds. As such, Postol only saw one winner.

“I think Terence Crawford will win easily. He will stop Spence after six rounds, in the second part of the fight. Speed will be the difference.

“There is nothing that Spence can do to Crawford that he hasn’t seen before. Even if [Spence] gives him some trouble in the early rounds, Crawford will adjust and will do better, and I believe he will stop him,” Postol stated

Toney On Crawford

Those sentiments were also echoed by former three-weight world champion James Toney. Toney made it clear that the fight would not go the distance, as both fighters would attempt to make a fast start and assert their control.

However, by doing so, they will risk exchanging with each other, as Toney backed Crawford to stop Spence at all costs.

But doing that will not be an easy task, given that Spence has not been beaten. Meanwhile, the ‘Truth’ has inflicted extensive damage on his opponents as shown through his wins over Mikey Garcia and Kell Brook

“I think he’s [Crawford] is too much for Spence, but we’ll find out, we’ll never know until they’re in that ring. I’m not being biased, Crawford is the better fighter, he’s fought the better competition, people say that Spence has but I don’t see it.

“I see a late round stoppage – knockout! Spence has never dealt with anyone who’s just as fast as he is and who hits harder than he does. I love Shawn Porter, but Crawford beat the breaks off him,” Toney

Martin Picks Spence

However, one man who has had a different take on the bout is Frank Martin. The lightweight contender faces Artem Harutyunyan on July 15th, 2023, in a WBC interim title fight.

Martin is undefeated, which makes him qualified to speak on a bout that involves two undefeated fighters in the form of Spence and Crawford.

But rather than back Crawford, Martin felt that Spence’s power and size would prove too much. After all, he is in the same stable as Spence as they both trainer under Derrick James

And in doing so, he questioned Crawford’s prior wins by stating that they were not on the same level as Spence.

“You know, those guys ain’t Errol Spence Jr. You know, Terence is a good fighter. You know, but I feel like this fight is gonna boil down to who just like can figure who out in the fight.

“And, you know, wit’ our coach that we got, Derrick James, you know, we always have a backup plan for everything. So, figuring anybody out ain’t nothing to us,” Martin

With both fighters putting everything on the line, the bout cannot come soon enough. Time will tell how it all plays out on fight night.
