Spence Still Wants Crawford, Canelo On The Charlos And More

Errol Spence Jr. is still keen on getting a rematch with Terence Crawford

That is according to Showtime’s Stephen Espinoza. Following Spence’s ninth-round stoppage, the former unified welterweight champion was adamant over a rematch at 154 pounds.

The terms of the rematch suggested that Crawford, that being the winner, would decide the weight class.

That is one thing, but the timing of the rematch is another.  There have been calls for Spence to retire following the loss, most notably from Stephen. A. Smith.

Meanwhile, there have also been calls on Spence to take some time off before jumping back into the ring with Crawford.

Regardless of what the case may be, Espinoza confirmed that a rematch was still on the cards, even if the timing of it was not clear.

Espinoza On Spence

“The question really is ‘What’s best for his [Spence] health, what’s best for his future?’ Is it a weight issue at 147? Is ‘54 right for him? Are there lingering effects from the eye or the car accident? “It’s an immediate rematch. It’d have to be, but there are always negotiations. And the reality is it is a big fight; it’s the biggest fight arguably for either one of them right now,” Espinoza

Spence has to ultimately decide what is best for him. And since he is entering into the latter parts of his career, he is in a sport where he cannot afford to take many risks. And there is no getting away from that.

Meanwhile, Canelo Alvarez has called Jermell Charlo a better fighter than his brother, Jermall Charlo, as they prepare to square off on September 30th, 2023.

Prior to the fight getting made, Canelo had been linked with fighting Jermall. However, the latter’s inactivity coupled with his  mental health issues meant that the American was not capable of being ready.

However, Jermell’s achievements are up there with the best. He has managed to become undisputed at junior middleweight, as he seeks to do the same at 168 and create history by being undisputed in two weight classes, much like Terence Crawford

Although there are concerns that the weight difference will play a major factor, since Charlo will jump up two weight classes, Canelo has talked up his opponent.

Canelo On The Charlos

“Yeah, my thought was Jermall, obviously, the most closest to my weight. But, you know, they’re both the same. I think, for me, in my opinion, Jermell is a better fighter than his brother. He have a better resume. He has better opposition, everything.

“He have a lotta talent, power and he was involved in a lotta good fights, too. So, he have a lotta things,” Canelo

This naturally begs the question: Will Canelo fight Jermall? Well, as of now, the Mexican has remained coy on that, given his focus is on Jermell. However, moving down the line, Alvarez did not rule it out.

“For me, that’s better. I like that kind of press conference. No, that’s not my plan. Right now, I’m 100% focused on Jermell. You never know. It could happen,” Canelo

Crawford On Tank After Spence

In addition to this, Terence Crawford has ruled out fighting Gervonta Davis at a catchweight by urging the lightweight to move up to 147 if he is serious.

Davis currently fights at 135 pounds, but he has fought at 140, as shown by his bout with Mario Barrios.

However, Tank does have a tendency to use rehydration clauses when he faces bigger opponents, as shown by his fight with Ryan Garcia. But Crawford ruled out doing such a thing by placing the ball in Tank’s court.

After all, Davis did back Errol Spence Jr. to beat Crawford, as well as claiming Bud had a ‘glass chin.’ In addition, he vowed to knock out Crawford if they ever squared off.

And now the undisputed welterweight champion has responded with an ultimatum.

“There ain’t no catchweight. You come up to 147. No, I’m not [entertaining the idea of a catchweight]. What champ? Who’s undisputed at 135 lbs? Devin Haney’s got all the belts; he’s the champ, nobody else is the champ. Tank’s the bigger draw. There are weight classes for a reason; tell him to come up here with the big boys, and I’ll welcome him,” Crawford

Ultimately, Spence, Canelo and Crawford have earned the right to decide what they should do with their careers. Between them they have won multiple world titles and have gotten undisputed status.

But in a sport where you are only as good as your last fight, it does take a lot to appease the fan base. However, when the three fighters retire that is when their legacy will truly be written.
