Spence Says Fundora Is Next, Crawford Could Follow

Errol Spence Jr. stated his next fight will be against WBC and WBO Junior Middleweight Champion Sebastian Fundora in November or January.

Those comments came earlier this month as Spence would be having his first appearance since being stopped by Terence Crawford last year. The defeat meant he missed the chance to become undisputed at 147. Now, a fight with Fundora will take place at 154. After Fundora beat Tim Tszyu to win the belts, Spence met him in the ring to say he wanted that fight next.

Spence vs. Crawford

Crawford also has his first fight at 154 against Israil Madrimov on August 3. A victory makes Crawford a four-division champion with Madrimov’s WBA belt. That would set the narrative for a massive unification with Spence. However, this all depends on Crawford. If he beats Madrimov, he may move up to 168 pounds to chase the Canelo Alvarez fight. A win over Canelo makes Crawford the biggest star in the sport and an all-time great. But Spence was focused on Fundora and then Crawford. Meanwhile, Crawford has also said there is the potential to run things back if certain boxing results go as planned.

“The possibility is there. He’s [Spence] fighting [Sebastian] Fundora for his titles [WBO and WBC]. I’m fighting for a title [Israil Madrimov’s WBA 154lbs title, and there is the possibility. He wins his fight, God willing, and I win my fight, God willing, and there’s the possibility,” Crawford said

Spence has also mapped out his career once he leaves boxing. He has signed Frank Martin under his management team. He represented Martin in the biggest fights of his career when he boxed Gervonta Davis. Spence was present at the presser as he backed his man to come out on top. While Martin would get knocked out, the experience gave Spence a taster of what it is to come as a promoter.

Spence’s Future

He revealed how his two car accidents, one of which resulted in a detached retina, had changed him. After the Crawford loss, there were calls on him to retire. Since Spence does not want to go out on a loss, there is the potential to win a title in another weight class before running things back. But after boxing, Spence’s plan was clear.

“But I like the promoter side. I feel like it might be my calling a little bit, being a promoter and looking at the young guys coming up and helping them get to the top of their level, because that’s where we at right now. He [Martin]’s at the top right now, and once he’s at the top, you’re the man.

“A lot of people take it lightly just because I came back and fought and all that but that’s serious stuff. It’s not too many people that go high speed in a Ferrari and get thrown from a Ferrari, land on solid concrete and still be here to talk today, still survive, still be coherent and everything.  That was traumatic and a brutal experience,” Spence said
