Spence Prepares For His Future, Recalls His Car Crashes -‘That Was Traumatic’

Errol Spence Jr. opened up about his future in the sport as he contemplates a career in promoting post-boxing.
Spence has not boxed since getting stopped by Terence Crawford last year. He was dropped three times on his way to a ninth-round stoppage loss. The defeat meant Spence missed out on becoming the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. The rematch with Crawford broke down as Spence underwent cataract surgery on his right eye.
Reports are linking him with a fight against Sebastian Fundora for October. This would be Spence’s first fight at 154 pounds, giving him a shot at another world title. But since there has been no official announcement, Spence has kept himself occupied with matters outside the ring. He attended the Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin presser. Spence has signed Martin under his Man Down management company. Based on his early taste of promoting, he could continue it.
Spence’s Future
“But I like the promoter side. I feel like it might be my calling a little bit, being a promoter and looking at the young guys coming up and helping them get to the top of their level, because that’s where we at right now. He [Martin]’s at the top right now, and once he’s at the top, you’re the man,” Spence said
Spence also admitted that he has little time left in the sport. He has had two serious car accidents, one of which resulted in a detached retina. While he returned from the accidents to beat Yordenis Ugas, it showed Spence the value of leaving the sport with his faculties intact. After the Crawford loss, there were calls for him to retire.
Spence’s Crashes
Going out on a defeat is unlikely, meaning Spence may get in the ring again. However, he has achieved what most boxers never will. He is the former Unified Welterweight Champion of the World. He has secured enough money to secure his future, with the Crawford fight giving him a $25 million guarantee plus PPV money. Looking back at those car accidents, Spence recognized how dangerous it could have been.
“A lot of people take it lightly just because I came back and fought and all that but that’s serious stuff. It’s not too many people that go high speed in a Ferrari and get thrown from a Ferrari, land on solid concrete and still be here to talk today, still survive, still be coherent and everything. That was traumatic and a brutal experience that I went through. People take it lightly because I’m still fighting and still talk s**t and all that but there was some serious stuff there. It was definitely serious,” Spence stated
Spence’s immediate focus will be on supporting Martin, who is chasing his first world title. Davis did back Spence to beat Crawford, which turned out wrong. Given that Spence was the slight favorite, can Martin upset the odds and beat Davis? Spence will be hoping for just that.
