Spence Hits Out At The Sport For Having Too Many Belts

Errol Spence Jr. has hit out at the sport of boxing’s governing bodies for having too many belts.
The current situation requires fighters to pay sanctioning fees in order to keep a hold of their belts.
And given the variety of belts on offer, which includes regular titles, fighters are having to put in more finances to keep the belts.
Although the governing bodies do aim to reinvest the money back into the sport, Spence has not been impressed.
“I feel like there are too many belts in boxing. It’s watering down boxing,” Spence
Much in the same way, Spence addressed this issue during his press tour with Terence Crawford.
In the aftermath, Spence took the mic on the biggest stage of his career to call out what he believed to be a major problem in the sport.
“We give three percent to these organisations, and we got to know where this money’s going to. I mean, you got Canelo and [Anthony] Joshua and all these guys making 50 million dollars, and these belts getting three percent of that.
“Where’s it going to? How is it helping the fighters out? What are they doing with it,” Spence said
In addition to this, Floyd Mayweather has spoken out against the existence of many belts.
Such a move has the impact of creating too many champions to the point where the value of the belt gets diluted.
And in the process of doing so, the chances of the best facing each other decreases with fighters not willing to give up the so-called lesser titles.
And Mayweather did not hold back in his condemnation.
“This is not good for the sport of boxing. Now when a fighter fights, every fighter is a champion. … Ain’t no such thing as super champion.
“You guys are just taking extra money from all these fighters (by) getting extra money from sanctioning fees,” Mayweather
Clearly, something has to give at some point. And with more fighters speaking out, boxing may need a revamp. You can stay up-to-date with the latest happenings in the world of boxing by visiting boxingblitz right here.
