Spence Denies Fundora Fight Date Rumors

Errol Spence Jr. has denied rumors linking him with a fight against Sebastian Fundora for March 29.

The fight would take place as a main event on PBC. The Truth would be having his first bout since losing to Terence Crawford in 2023. He was dropped to the canvas three times, getting stopped in round nine. The win made Crawford the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. Spence had to deal with his first loss. He eventually went for cataract surgery on his right eye. Spence blamed his vision problems as the reason for his below-par performance. But he never got the chance to run things back.

His attempts at his next fight also suffered due to changes in his team. Spence left Derrick James, who then sued him. James claimed that Spence still owed him money from the Crawford fight. But now it seems fans could see Spence back against Fundora. The latter is the WBC and WBO Junior Middleweight Champion, meaning there is plenty to fight for. However, given that Spence lost his last fight at 147, the WBO President has said this belt is not on the line.

Spence’s Future

“He’s been inactive for two years, he’s coming off a brutal TKO loss to Terence Crawford and he has never fought at 154lbs nor been rated at 154lbs. So I have those facts that are undisputed… You may say ‘Errol Spence is one of the biggest names at 154lbs, it’s a great fight against Fundora’.

“But based on those facts and the other fighters that are waiting their turn at 154lbs, having fought at 154lbs plus their level activity, their suitable opposition, having won regional titles, having faced rated contenders. If I allow Spence to fight Fundora immediately for the title with those facts. Would that be a good precedent to set?,” Gustavo Oliveiri said

What’s Next?

Another loss for Spence will increase the calls on him to retire. The Truth has secured his financial future from the sport. He is also a former unified welterweight champion, with only one loss on his record. Boxers have shown previously that they stay in the sport for too long. Spence will want to avoid doing that, as one punch can change a career. He is on record saying that the two car crashes he suffered took a lot out of him. That has left doubts over whether he is the same fighter. He has also cast doubt on his return.

“A lot of people take it lightly just because I came back and fought and all that but that’s serious stuff. It’s not too many people that go high speed in a Ferrari and get thrown from a Ferrari, land on solid concrete and still be here to talk today, still survive, still be coherent and everything.  That was traumatic and a brutal experience that I went through…I’ve [always] been rating him (Crawford) high, I’ve rated him super high. It definitely wasn’t my night, but you know I definitely want to get that back,” Spence stated
