Spence-Crawford Rematch Happening, De La Hoya Backs Crawford To Beat Canelo

Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford will fight once again after the ‘Truth’ decided to reactivate his rematch clause.

The first fight was completely one-way traffic as Crawford knocked down Spence three times, as he stopped the welterweight in the ninth round.

The victory made history as Crawford became the first undisputed champion of the four-belt era, as well as becoming undisputed in a second weight class.

However, if Spence wants to come out victorious, he will have to perform a whole lot different. Bud managed to take away the jab prevented Spence by out-jabbing him from a southpaw stance, which negated any body work he wanted to do.

Not only that, but Crawford’s ability to switch from defense to offence was shown in the second round as he countered from Spence when the latter overextended from his jab.

And now Crawford’s coach, Bomac, has confirmed the news.

Bomac On Spence-Crawford

“He just texted me yesterday Spence activated his rematch [clause]. It’s confirmed. We don’t have a date yet,” Bomac said

Nevertheless, the fight will put Spence’s career on the line. The failure to beat Crawford, if it does occur at 154, will remove any doubts over claims that he was weight-drained at 147.

Not only that, but it would solidify Bud as the best fighter of this era. And to top it all off, any chances of securing a mega fight with Canelo Alvarez later down the line would also diminish.

However, the following the loss, Spence did promise to do better next time.

“I’m not gonna stew over it at all. I did what I was supposed to do, regardless of the outcome. I promised everybody I was going to do it and I did it as a man. I’m not gonna sulk over this, I’ll get right back and get to it, hopefully at 154 lbs. I know I’m a lot better than what I showed tonight. I know that a lot of things were off with me. Even though Terence did what he was supposed to, he was sharp and he was on-point, and he made sure he was 100 percent ready in this fight,” Spence

De La Hoya On Crawford-Canelo

Aside from the Crawford-Spence rematch, a fight between Canelo and Crawford has been talked about.

Both fighters have expressed their willingness to face each other at 168 pounds. This would require Crawford to move up three weight classes and taken on Alvarez for all of his titles at 168.

The chance to become undisputed in a third weight class is certainly appealing. However, if it does happen, then Oscar De La Hoya has backed Crawford to come out on top.

The Golden Boy Promoter is not on the best of terms with Canelo, especially since the latter has been very critical of him of late.

“I think he have a lot of issues. Oscar have a lot of issues with his life. I don’t really know. When I fought with Floyd Mayweather [in 2013] he was in rehab two days before the fight. Kind of bad. I don’t know really what happened there. I think the same thing [that De La Hoya always seems to be lying],” Alvarez added. “He say a lot of things and he’s a hypocrite. I think he’s that kind of person,” Canelo

With that being said, De La Hoya pointed out to Crawford’s boxing skills as being too much. And yet, it is important to remember that weight classes do exist for a reason.

Therefore, expecting Crawford to move up 20 pounds to dominate Alvarez would be a tall order. However, that is how De La Hoya saw things playing out. His following comments confirmed as much.

“Terence Crawford will beat Canelo any time. I said this before. ‘The good, talented man will always beat the small, talented fighter,’ But Terence Crawford is not small. Terrence Crawford is a big guy. He can walk around at 168 if he wants to. If this fight is made at 164, Terence Crawford all day. But just with the skill set alone, Terence Crawford is a master. He will make Canelo look like a child, and that’s just my boxing experience. Crawford will beat him [Canelo] in a master performance in a master class any given day. Talent alone. It’s talent alone,” De La Hoya
