Spence-Crawford Rematch Frustrates Malignaggi

Paulie Malignaggi has not been best pleased by the Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. rematch.

Spence made the decision to activate the rematch following his ninth-round-stoppage defeat to Crawford. The way in which the fight went, though, did raise question marks over whether a rematch was warranted.

Spence was dropped three times in a one-sided fight, as Crawford became the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era. And in doing so, it marked the second time that he became undisputed after having achieved that at 140.

Although a rematch was always possible, Crawford had been linked with other mega fights. A bout with Jermell Charlo and Canelo Alvarez is a realistic possibility.

But before any of them can happen, Crawford must overcome Spence which will deprive fans of those match-ups for now. And that is something Malignaggi was not happy about.

Malignaggi On Spence-Crawford

“So in this particular situation [Crawford-Spence], I really have no interest in the rematch. The first fight decided it for me. I don’t have no cares in the world for the rematch. I don’t want to see it. They’ll still make it, and they’ll do what they want to do.

“Again, I don’t see anything different. It was very clear that Terence could hurt Errol. Terence can clearly hurt Errol and Errol. For me, I didn’t even see an attempt at an adjustment. Errol has to come forward to try and beat you and mow you down. If he starts going backwards, he’s out of ideas. He can’t fight going backwards. Once he started going backward in that first fight, essentially, the competitive aspect of the fight was over,” Malignaggi

In reality, big time fights do include rematch clauses in order to protect the investment that is the fighter. However, in doing so, this does produce bouts that fans do not want to see.

And with no title on the line at 154, even if Spence does come out victorious, there will be no belt on the line. So in reality, the ‘Truth’ is in a no-win situation.
