Showtime Announces Their Final Card, Tim Tszyu’s Next Fight Becomes Clearer

In some boxing news, Showtime has decided to scrap a boxing event on December 9th, 2023, by revealing one on December 16th, 2023.

There had been talks that Floyd Mayweather Jr. could have an exhibition on that date against Mikey Garcia or Manny Pacquiao. The event would have marked Showtime’s final card after reports that they would not cover boxing in 2023.

Despite this being the case, Garcia denied those plans by stating that he was not making a comeback anytime soon. Meanwhile, a rematch with Pacquiao never took off, despite Pacman suggesting it was being considered.

This may have been due to the fact that the date would put Showtime up against Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis. And since the latter duo are fighting for a world title at 140, with Prograis’ WBC belt on the line, the date may not have made much sense.

Showtime’s Next Move

Instead, the new event will take place at the at the Armory, Minneapolis, in place of the MGM Grand in Vegas. Since then, Keith Idec of Boxing Scene has stated that David Morrell Jr. will headline the card. Although that may be the case, his opponent has not been confirmed. A win for Morrell Jr, however, will boost his chances of fighting Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez moving forward.

And now according to Keith Idec of Boxing Scene, that has been confirmed. The news marks what will be Showtime’s final broadcast of the year after reports that they will pull out of boxing in 2024.

The bout will boost Morrell Jr.’s profile on the biggest stage, as a victory could improve the undefeated fighter’s attempts at facing Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez later down the line.

Tim Tszyu’s Next Fight

Meanwhile, the WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu is expected to defend his belt in March of next year. The Australian grabbed the belt after Jermell Charlo was stripped for not facing the Australian who was his mandatory.

Thereafter, Tszyu successfully defended his title against Brian Mendoza. The win has opened up more doors for Tszyu to chase the biggest fights.

Fights with Charlo and Terence Crawford are possible. The former has been clear about his dissatisfaction at being stripped, while the latter could face Tszyu for a belt in a tough fight to introduce himself to the 154-pound division. In any event, Tszyu’s promoter, George Rose, backed his fighter to come out on top.

“We’ll never stop discussions with Jermell Charlo. He’s been on the radar for a very, very long time, and he’s not someone that will ever fall off, but he still holds them belts, so that’s something that Tim wants to take off him. We’re looking for the big American opportunities. So, the biggest opportunity for Tim.

“You’ve got Errol Spence, Terence Crawford, Jermell Charlo, Erickson Lubin, and Danny Garcia. Even if you move up in weight, you’ve got Jermall Charlo, you got Lara, you got Canelo, who’s only two weight divisions away. We saw that Jermell Charlo had no fear of stepping in with Canelo. That’s something that Tim would absolutely thrive on if he was given the opportunity as well,” Rose said
