Should Tyson Fury Retire?

Tyson Fury has a big decision to make over his future following his loss to Oleksandr Usyk

Fury came out second best to Usyk once again, losing via a unanimous decision. It ends any hopes of a trilogy fight or an Undisputed Heavyweight Championship fight with Daniel Dubois. Fury had arguably put himself through the two toughest training camps of his career to prepare for Usyk. But the Ukrainian was simply levels above, making him this era’s best heavyweight. Fury must now decide whether it is worth fighting if he can no longer call himself the best. The Usyk fights have earned him over $100 million. That has secured his financial future from the sport.

The Gypsy King also took a lot of punishment in some of his fights. The three Deontay Wilder fights saw Fury hit the canvas numerous times. He even admitted that after the third fight he felt he had suffered brain damage. The first Usyk fight also caused a lot of damage.

Fury was bouncing around the ropes in the ninth round, almost getting knocked out before the referee imposed a standing eight count. Fury is known for not keeping himself in the best shape once he is not fighting. At 36, Fury can no longer get away with that. After the first Usyk loss, he was seen getting thrown out of a nightclub in his hometown of Morecambe for being drunk.

Fury’s Future

While Fury tried to downplay the significance of this, it did show The Gypsy King may struggle to deal with losses moving forward if he is no longer at his peak. The only credible fight he could take is the Anthony Joshua one. It offers him a big payday. It also allows him to prove who is the best British heavyweight. The two fighters are both coming off losses.

Fury’s performance against Usyk was much better than when Joshua faced Dubois. The Gypsy King may fancy his chances. But if he were to lose, Fury would go down from being the best of his era to being behind Joshua. He risks losing the legacy he has built with this single fight. But Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn admitted that was the fight to make.

“It’s what people will want to watch. ‘The Fury/Joshua fight is a great fight and if it happens it will be a mega fight, it will be brilliant. But it will only happen if Tyson wants to do it and that’s a big if. And if he doesn’t want to do it, then so be it,” Warren said

“The reality is there’s only one fight for Tyson Fury and that’s Anthony Joshua.’ ‘It’s the biggest fight probably in the history of British boxing, everyone will always want to see it.’For me, AJ against Fury is the one, it’s the one at Wembley, I’m going to be pushing His Excellency [Turki Alalshikh] to make the fight,” Hearn
