Shields Can Complete Boxing With Undisputed Heavyweight Title

Claressa Shields takes on Danielle Perkins for the Undisputed Heavyweight Title in a historic clash on Sunday.
Shields has already become undisputed at 154 and 160. She is the current WBC and WBF champion at heavyweight. This clash has the IBF and WBO belts up for grabs too. The WBA title is not recognized in the women’s heavyweight division, meaning this fight is for all the belts. She defeated the Vanessa Lapage-Joanisse in her last bout.
Perkins is a massive underdog. She only has five professional fights, even if she is undefeated. She is also 42, while Shields is in her prime at 29. None of Perkins’ opponents have had more than five fights, meaning this is by far her biggest test. She enters into the bout with a win against Christianne Fahey. With so much history on the line, the pair were ready to leave everything in the ring.
Shields’ Mindset
“Danielle might be stronger, she is smooth and has skills. She went to the world championships and won a gold medal and a bronze. I won three gold medals at the world championships and two Olympic gold medals. Danielle may not be the fastest, she’s unorthodox and is a southpaw, but when she hits her opponents, their whole game plans change.
“Danielle may not be the fastest, she’s unorthodox and is a southpaw, but when she hits her opponents, their whole game plans change…I have gotten my flowers, but it ain’t enough. I didn’t get my flowers for so many years. [And] I still have to talk about how great I am. I am going to continue to do this until there aren’t any doubters and the haters bow down,” Shields
Perkins’ Response
“No one has ever wanted to fight me. I have only had five professional fights because no one wants to step in the ring with me. It’s unfortunate because I’ve got some skills. I know that Claressa is up for the challenge. This is a real risk. No other middleweight would ever take this kind of risk. I have never had any ill will toward Claressa outside of the ring, but I am going into this fight with 100 percent intent to kill. It has nothing to do with her outside of the ring.
“It’s unfortunate because I’ve got some skills…Claressa and I are good friends, and those make for the best fights. We respect each other. She is going to try and break my nose, and I am going to try and break her jaw,” Perkins
