Shakur Stevenson Still Eyeing Gervonta Davis Showdown – ‘Everybody’s Talking About It’

Shakur Stevenson has not given up hope of fighting Gervonta Davis.
Stevenson is the current WBC Lightweight Champion as he prepares for his next fight against Floyd Schofield. He faces Schofield on February 22 which will be his first fight with Matchroom Boxing since leaving Top Rank. Shakur has had a tricky period of late. He was meant to fight Joe Cordina last year. But he broke his hand, meaning that the fight did not go ahead. He was then aiming for a fight against his WBC mandatory William Zepeda. But the Mexican withdrew after injuring his hand.
Shakur will now face the undefeated Schofield, who is looking to cause an upset in his first world title shot. Shakur knows that a win takes him closer to securing a unification against the WBA Lightweight Champion Gervonta. Tank is set to face Lamont Roach Jr. next on March 1. He has said that he will retire this year, meaning that there is not a lot of time to make that bout. There have been conflicting narratives from both camps about this fight.
Hearn Reacts
Davis has said that he would fight Shakur, before stating that he does not rate his skills. Shakur was always adamant that he wanted to make that fight. But he also recognized that he is not in a position to make any offers since he is the B-side. Eddie Hearn is hoping to secure Shakur some of the biggest fights, one of which was Davis.
“The plan for Shakur Stevenson is Floyd Schofield, Williams Zepeda, and Gervonta Davis. That’s in 2025… that fight (against Gervonta) will be one of the biggest in the world. I think it’s [retirement] to keep everybody guessing. You know, like we are, everybody’s talking about it (…) it’s a strategy that I’ve used myself, it’s a strategy that (Tyson) Fury is using at the moment,” Hearn said
Other Options
If the Davis fight does not happen, there are other opportunities for Shakur. He could move up to 140 pounds and face some big names. Fights against Teofemo Lopez, Ryan Garcia, and Devin Haney are just some of the names. But that would all depend on them staying at 140 pounds. Those fighters are arguably bigger than Shakur, meaning there is not much time to make those bouts. But Stevenson is considered one of the best boxers in the sport.
He is often praised for his defense. While he may not get those big fights, his stock can only increase as long as he continues winning. The decision to sign with Matchroom will increase his profile globally, given that Eddie Hearn works closely with the Saudis. Hearn is also one of the biggest promoters in the UK, while also having established himself in the US. The future does look positive for Shakur moving forward. But he must ensure that he gets past Schofield first.
