Shakur Stevenson Reacts To ‘Poisoning’ Allegations – ‘I’m A Clean Boxer’

Shakur Stevenson has had his say on Floyd Schofield pulling out of their fight. 

Stevenson simply cannot catch a break as he prepares to make his Matchroom Boxing debut on February 22. He will now face off against Josh Padley in a fight that certainly is underwhelming. He was initially set for his Matchroom Boxing debut last year against Joe Cordina. The fight was respectable since Cordina is a former world champion, even if he was moving up to lightweight. But Shakur could not go through with the fight after he injured his hand. 

He subsequently underwent surgery, as there were suggestions that he could face his WBC mandator William Zepeda on his return. Zepeda is a knockout artist, meaning it would have tested Shakur’s skills to the limit. But Zepeda also withdrew from the fight after he suffered his own hand injury. That understandably left Shakur frustrated since he is trying to expand his profile globally now that he is working closely with the Saudis.

He had secured his first world title shot with this fight, meaning there was plenty on the line. But Schofield pulled out at the last minute with an illness. He was later seen in hospital with allegations that someone from Shakur’s camp may have poisoned him. 

Shakur Reacts

Shakur immediately denied those claims, saying there was no basis for that. He also let it be known that he was not convinced Schofield would go through the fight. He referenced how he would not advise Schofield to face someone like him at his age. And he felt that there were always doubts about Schofield’s ability to go through with the fight. Shakur also claimed he may have struggled trying to make weight. Schofield is a bigger fighter than Shakur. 

“I just put myself in his shoes and it just didn’t make no sense for them to even come out here and accept this fight and make this fight happen, I didn’t believe it. When you cutting weight you be dehydrated and all that kind of stuff and I feel as though he was probably a little dehydrated and, you know, he’ll be okay. Here’s the thing with that. When he first put out the poisoning thing he said Shakur’s massage therapist rubbed cream on us.

“I don’t have a massage therapist down here so how did my massage therapist rub any cream on you? It’s hard for me to believe somebody who’s just constantly coming up with something new every single day. No other opponent that I ever fought have ever complained about anything with me. I always been a clean boxer, I always do things the right way. So to hear all of these things is like clown stuff so I try not to get involved in the circus,” Shakur said
