Shakur Stevenson is ready to face Frank Martin for the vacant WBC belt at lightweight.

After Devin Haney was stripped of the WBC belt at 135 following his move up to 140, Stevenson was in line to face the next-highest opponent for the belt.

After all, he is the WBC interim champion at 135. As a result, the WBC ordered Stevenson to face Martin since Vasiliy Lomachenko had no plans on fighting this year.

While both fighters are undefeated, Shakur has only had one fight at the weight class. He stopped Shuichiro Yoshino in the sixth round in what was an impressive display. So facing Martin, who is also undefeated, has gotten Shakur ready.

Shakur On Martin

“It’s gonna be a good fight. Obviously it’s level so we’re gonna get to see. I can’t wait to show the world who I am,” Stevenson

A win would do wonders for Stevenson’s credentials moving forward. A title would allow him to command the biggest fights at 135.

And since Haney is a champion in recess at 135 for the WBC belt, a fight between Shakur and Haney could occur later down the line.

Shakur’s Future

However, even if that were not the case, other fights with Loma and Gervonta Davis could play out. A title is likely to balance the pulling power that Shakur will get, given that Davis’ camp have ruled out the fight for now due to the financials.

Not only that, but if Shakur were to grab a title at 135, the boxer may feel its time to move up to junior welterweight. That would naturally increase the calls to make the Haney fight.

After all, the ‘Dream’ had hinted that he was struggling to make 135 as shown by his weigh-ins for the George Kambosos Jr. fights.

So a fight at junior welterweight would remove those doubts, as a world title for Shakur would naturally draw his attention to the next target. So moving forward, Shakur has a lot to play for.
