Ryan Garcia’s Vandalism Charge Dropped

Ryan Garcia’s vandalism charge has been dismissed, much to the relief of the boxer.
Garcia was arrested after reports he caused over $15,000 worth of damage at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills hotel. The boxer was going through some troubles after he had faced Devin Haney in one of the biggest fights of this year. It lived up to the hype, as Garcia produced one of the biggest shocks in recent memory to beat Haney via a majority decision.
He sent Haney to the canvas three times as The Dream had no answer to Garcia’s left hook. But it all turned for the worse, as Garcia would end up failing VADA tests for Ostarine. He was subsequently given a one-year ban, meaning he cannot box until April 2025. The result was also declared a no-contest, meaning that Haney remained undefeated.
Garcia did not take that very well. He maintained that the amount in his system was not enough to enhance performance. Garcia’s behavior would then spiral out of control. The hotel staff alleged he was under the influence. It is also believed the hotel staff cut his supply of alcohol. Some damage was directed against a ‘TV, a refrigerator, two hallway sconce lights, a vase and a metal casing for a door hinge.’ But Garcia has made restitution to the hotel, with the case now being dismissed.
Garcia’s Charges
“Mr. Goldstein [Garcia’s attorney] and I have seen athletes lose their money, very quickly, because people always want to be around you to party when you have the money. But when that money’s gone, your friends are no longer around and they no longer have their hands out because your money’s gone. And you can look at Mike Tyson. It happened to Muhammad Ali. It happens to a lot of people in your field. Listen to Mr. Goldstein, listen to people who are older because we’ve been around the block a few times, OK? And we know what’s going on. So good luck, son,” Judge James P. Cooper III
Garcia recently returned to training, confirming that he wants to rematch Haney. Devin has also previously stated that he wants to get his own back following that performance. Bill Haney has now called on Ryan to enrol within VADA.
“Ryan Garcia and Team Garcia, if you’re talking about wanting a rematch, enroll in the drug program in 48 hours. VADA is waiting on you. The next move will be on you, Ryan Garcia, and Team Garcia while you’re fat-mouthing. Let’s see how much you want the rematch. He was fat-mouthing at the shoe store. He mentioned my name, and you know when you mention my name, I’m going to pull up. We’re enrolled [in drug testing], getting ready to fight whoever. Ryan Garcia, is it you? You got 48 hours, champ. Make your next move be your next move,” Bill said
Garcia vs. Haney
Nevertheless, there are still some other obstacles that need to be overcome. Haney’s camp will now argue they have more leverage in the rematch. They will likely use Garcia’s failed VADA tests and his failure to make the 140-pound limit as a way to add on extra stipulations. Garcia experienced being the B-side when he faced Gervonta Davis. He boxed Davis at a 136-pound catchweight with a ten-pound rehydration clause.
Despite Garcia starting the fight well, he was ultimately stopped in the seventh round. Ryan felt the weight stipulations had drained him, vowing to never put himself at a disadvantage. Haney’s team is also likely to want a bigger purse, given that they will argue that they lost money from the first fight.
Haney has sued Garcia for battery, fraud and unjust enrichment. He has also named Golden Boy Promotions in the lawsuit.
There is no question that Devin’s brand has been damaged after the Garcia fight. Only Top Tank made a purse bid for his mandatory Sandor Martin. Haney would end up vacating his WBC Junior Welterweight Title, showing how much his brand had fallen. There are also question marks over whether Garcia wants to fight at a similar weight.
He has previously spoken about wanting to face Errol Spence Jr. and Sebastian Fundora. Spence boxed at 147 in his last fight, while Fundora fought at 154 pounds. Garcia may want the fight to take place near this weight. Haney has the frame to do that since he comes in around 160 pounds after rehydrating. But if he could not take Garcia’s shots at the 143-pound limit, he would unlikely do so at a higher weight class. Garcia’s dropped charges means he is one step closer to having a potential Haney rematch.
