Ryan Garcia Vows Never To Lose Again After KO Loss To Tank Davis
Ryan Garcia has opened up on the lessons that were learned following his loss to Gervonta Davis.
In the biggest fight of his career at 135 pounds, the boxer came up short after being stopped in the seventh round with a body shot. In the aftermath, Garcia received a lot of criticism for the manner of the defeat.
The boxer immediately got up once the referee had finished the count, with suggestions that he had quit. Meanwhile, the fighter offered some reasons as to why he had been compromised in the fight. Garcia was vocal about how the 136-pound catchweight, which was followed by a ten-pound rehydration clause, had hindered him.
And as part of that process, Garcia has made it clear that he aims to have a rematch with Davis later down the line. However, the stipulations would require that he faces the boxer at his desired weight, which is most likely going to be 140 pounds. That would give Garcia an advantage since he is much bigger than Davis, something which the rehydration clause had countered. But now that the dust had settled down somewhat, the boxer was ready to come back stronger.
Garcia’s Motivation
“I’m never going to lose again. I don’t want to lose again. I’m going to erase the things I was doing. I wasn’t being a professional, but sometimes you got to lose to realize I got to make a change here. It’s not fun and games. This is a real sport. You could get hurt. It’s been a great change for me. I definitely feel more focused, more committed to the sport, more dedicated. It feels like just the thing I needed,” Garcia said
One of the things that has helped Garcia get that focus has been his new training set-up. The boxer decided to let Joe Goossen go after the Davis loss, as Derrick James was brought in. The latter is known for his extreme focus on boxing fundamentals, which will be vital since Garcia’s defense was criticized in the Davis loss.
And Garcia will need those skills when he takes on Oscar Duarte on December 2nd, 2023. The Mexican is known for being a knockout artist, having stopped his last eleven opponents. But should Garcia come through, as he is expected to do, then the super fights could follow.
Garcia’s Aim
“I just let God guide me and he guided me to Dallas, Texas, and with a great trainer like Derrick, and I could see the difference. Sometimes you need to lose and sometimes you need to hit rock bottom to realize the changes you need to make. And I think that what’s going to make me great and show people who I am is just how I bounce back. It’s not easy to lose, but great champions come back,” Garcia
Garcia’s success has been overshadowed by him being a social media star. But the only way to combat that narrative would be to win a world title. And a victory over Duarte could be the first step in doing that.
