Ryan Garcia Says No To Oscar De La Hoya About FIghting Jose Ramirez

Ryan Garcia is against Oscar De La Hoya’s claims that a fight with Jose Ramirez is close, as he distanced himself from the fight.

De La Hoya’s comments came after he suggested Rolando Romero had priced himself out of the fight. That was the last thing Garcia needed, given that he had withdrawn from talks to face Devin Haney. That change in stance was done to make a better business move.

“I’ve notified my team I’m going a different route. My intention now is to fight Rolando Romero. I pray my team backs me on this decision. Oscar, make the fight happen. That’s the move. Bigger fight, bigger business,” Garcia revealed

Garcia hoped the Romero fight would have given him the WBA Junior Welterweight Title and allow him to face Haney in a much bigger unification. As of now, that is far from close, leaving Garcia in a predicament.

Garcia On Lopez

“Looking like @RyanGarcia vs jose Ramirez is getting close and happening. [Rolly] Priced himself out

“No Ramirez. Let’s make that clear,” Garcia said

This naturally raises question marks over where Garcia goes next. After turning down the Haney fight, he cannot backtrack on those words, as it would show a weakness in his bargaining position. The right course of action would be to go back and negotiate with Romero in the hope of getting a deal. So far, nothing indicates that this will happen, leaving Garcia short of opponents.

Garcia’s Options

Other opponents in the division include Teofimo Lopez and Subriel Matias. Both fights are equally as tough as the Haney fight, leaving Garcia with no choice but to face a lesser-quality opponent or get the Romero fight over the line. It also shows the deep divide between Garcia and De La Hoya.

Ryan is in a legal battle with Golden Boy Promotions, alleging a breach of contract. Golden Boy responded by trying to make Garcia honour the contract, hoping to tie him down for the long term. But reports indicate that his contract will end this year, raising suggestions that he could sign with PBC.

Garcia was spotted hanging out with Floyd Mayweather before he decided to pursue Romero, suggesting that Mayweather influenced his decision. Although Garcia does have a commercial draw, he does risk harming his career if he does not remain active.  He already took a lot of time away from the sport when he was dealing with his mental health struggles.

Garcia’s Aim

“I want to keep fighting and stay active, whether a big fight happens or not. I have to stay active because that’s the one thing that’s crippled me. When I’m active, I’m on fire. You’ve seen it before. When I fight continuously I’m only going to be better. It’s when I get thrown bulls**t curve balls … I’m tired of getting done like that. Now I’m going to stay focused and consistent,” Garcia remarked

That was followed up by his first career loss when Gervonta Davis stopped him in the seventh round. Now that he has teamed up with Derrick James and is at 140, Garcia must continue to hone his skills.
