Ryan Garcia Confirms Mario Barrios As His Next Opponent

Ryan Garcia has confirmed his next opponent, announcing he has signed a deal to challenge WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios for February 21.
Garcia is looking to rebound from two significant hurdles: his May loss to Rolly Romero, and the ring inactivity from his year-long suspension that followed after his no-contest against Devin Haney once he tested positive for Ostarine.
Ryan was briefly linked to a potential crossover fight against Jake Paul, but the latter will now face Anthony Joshua. Garcia also ‘verbally agreed’ to fight Conor Benn, but Conor has just boxed at 160 against Chris Eubank Jr.
Barrios’ stock has fallen after his majority draw against Manny Pacquiao, when many felt he had come out second best. That was the second fight on the bounce where Barrios suffered a draw after experiencing a split draw against Abel Ramos.
Is It The Right Fight For Garcia?
By immediately challenging the WBC Welterweight Champion, Garcia signals his serious intent. A victory instantly validates his decision to move up in weight and erases much of the negative stigma attached to his recent controversies. Furthermore, the timing of this fight capitalizes on a perceived dip in Barrios’ form. If Garcia can use his speed and power early, he stands a realistic chance of becoming a world champion.
Despite the potential rewards, Barrios is no pushover. Garcia’s primary weapon is his explosive speed and devastating left hook, which often leads to early knockouts. However, Barrios is an extremely tough, seasoned professional, who has only been stopped once when he faced Tank Davis. If Garcia cannot finish the fight early—a real possibility against a champion of Barrios’ caliber—he will be forced into a twelve-round battle where his conditioning will be tested.
