Roy Jones Jr. Ready To Fight Jake Paul – ‘I’m Coming To Knock Him Out’
Roy Jones Jr. is willing to step in the ring to box Jake Paul.
His comments were made in response to Paul’s boxing bout against Mike Tyson. The fight failed to live up to expectations despite the huge pre-fight build-up. Paul outboxed Tyson, working him for the full eight rounds to win a comfortable unanimous decision. Tyson later revealed that he had been wearing a compression sleeve on his knee, suggesting he was not 100% fit in the fight. Tyson had also withdrawn from the initial July 20 date after suffering from an inflamed ulcer. When he addressed the incident of the inflamed ulcer, he said he could have died.
There were major safety concerns as the 58-year-old had not boxed professionally since 2005 when he lost to Kevin McBride. But both fighters got out of the ring in one piece. Paul reportedly picked up $40 million, while Tyson allegedly picked up $20 million. This was without any sponsorship deals being factored in. The fight also broke numerous records for Netflix. It was watched by 108 million viewers across the globe, setting a record for a live gate of over $18 million for a non-Las Vegas event.
But it was not all successful, as many fans complained about the stream glitching, perhaps due to the significant demand to watch the fight. Jones understands what it is like to face Tyson, having boxed him in an exhibition in 2020. Their fight ended in a split draw. They sold over 1 million PPVs. Now, Jones is 55 years old. He is open to facing Jake. Jones has not boxed since losing to MMA fighter Anthony Pettis last year via a split decision. There have been concerns that Jones is showing slight signs of slurred speech.
Jones On Paul
This is referred to as being punch drunk after taking significant blows in the boxing ring. But Jones has shown that he is keen on taking that fight, stating that he could beat Jake, provided he is prepared fully. Paul would be open to making that fight, given the huge amount of money he generated against Tyson. However, his major problem is that fans may not be so welcoming of him facing another older boxer. But Jones was ready if the opportunity arose.
“I haven’t had any conversations about fighting Jake Paul. I am not really a full-fledged heavyweight, but I weigh probably what he weighs right now. It wouldn’t be hard to match his weight, I guess. They do catch weights, so I’m sure we could figure out the right weight. We can make it happen.
“The only thing different though is he will probably have to take me out because I’m coming to knock him out. I’m going to get him, or he’s going to get me. It would be very difficult to pick him apart because he is so powerful and big. He has power and is a dangerous puncher. I would beat him, I’m sure, but you would have to be on your A-game all night, especially at my age,” Jones said
