Regis Prograis Tells Tanks Davis: Fight At 140 Or Not At All

Regis Prograis has ruled out a fight with Gervonta Davis at a catchweight.

Prograis is preparing to face Devin Haney this Saturday as he puts his WBC junior welterweight title on the line. His sole defeat came at the hands of the former undisputed champion Josh Taylor at 140. Prograis’ record shows that he has stopped 24 opponents in his 29 wins.

The boxer, therefore, has become comfortable at the weight as he targets the biggest fights at the age of 34. A win over Haney could do that, with Tank Davis being mentioned. But in order to secure that fight, Prograis has dismissed the idea of a catchweight. Davis is known for imposing rehydration clauses on bigger fighters, as shown with the ten-pound clause against Ryan Garcia. However, Prograis has refused to do anything similar.

Prograis On Davis

“Nope, no catchweight [for Davis]. It’s 140. That’s it. I want to be the Marvin Hagler of my division. It’s going to be 140 and that’s it. Of course [Davis is the biggest fight for me]. He and Canelo [Alvarez] are the face of boxing. Either [Davis], or a Ryan or Teo [for my next fight],” Prograis said

The narrative for a Davis-Prograis fight is in place. Tank recently described Prograis as ‘flat-footed’ in response to his training preparations. In response, Prograis refused to entertain the comments. The focus was on ensuring that Haney was the aim moving forward.

“[I] don’t care bro. [And] I beat the odds already bro. I don’t care I don’t care what nobody says bro. I don’t care about no odds. [Also] I disconnected from the whole um from the whole world right now this whole week. So I don’t care I don’t care what nobody said,” Prograis revealed

Aside from Prograis, Davis is preparing for his comeback fight, which is expected to go down next year. Davis recently returned to training after being released from jail. The boxer was imprisoned for violating the terms of his house arrest over a hit-and-run incident.

The boxer broke the conditions of staying at his coach, Calvin Ford’s house. But now that the fighter is back in training, a PPV fight is being discussed for next spring. Following PBC’s deal with Amazon Prime Video, Davis is in the running to headline it. Although a fight with Prograis is unlikely since Davis will want a tune-up after being in jail, Prograis’ plans were clear.

Prograis’ Plans

“I feel like I am going to stay at 140 for the rest of my career. This is my weight class. They can come to me … I hired a nutritionist and I started making weight his way and it’s been easier and easier. From 135 to 147, it’s that glamor division. There are so many good fights that could be made around us. It’s going to be all big fights,” Prograis stated

Come fight night, Prograis knows a win over Haney puts him in the conversation for the best fights, which is why it is all on the line. Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingnews.com
