Pros React To Usyk's Win Over Fury - 'Usyk Won 6 Straight Rounds'

Boxing pros reacted to Oleksandr Usyk’s win over Tyson Fury, the second time he has beaten The Gypsy King.

Usyk won a unanimous decision this time around, getting a 116-112 card from all three judges. He remained undefeated, taking his record to 23-0. He will now go down as one of the best heavyweights of this era. The fight still produced some controversy, with Fury’s camp not being happy with the judging. But the boxing statistics showed that Usyk was the better man. He outlanded Fury by 179 punches compared to 142. While Fury threw more at 509 compared to 423, those stats showed just how good Usyk’s defense had been. Fury can no longer say he is the best heavyweight of this era.

Although his team, Frank Warren and Bob Arum, are trying to rewrite the narrative that it was a bad decision, history books will say otherwise. Even the AI scoring system had Usyk winning. The AI scoring system had it much worse for Fury. It scored the fight 118-112 for Usyk, showing perhaps the scorecards were kind to Fury. Most of the boxing pros had Usyk winning the first fight. The same can be said for this one, removing doubts that Usyk had been gifted a decision.

Reaction

“I think Usyk pulled it off in the second half of the fight. He came out strong in the second half. I didn’t see Tyson use that many jabs or use his distance. We saw the outcome and Usyk deserved it. I don’t think I did. I saw Tyson tired. It’s a testament to Usyk’s abilities inside the ring. Go back to the drawing board. We all get beat, one way or the other,” De La Hoya said

“The right man won. I think Frank Warren is at ringside complaining that it was a robbery. He’s probably watching it with his emotional glasses on thinking that Tyson Fury has one the fight and they’ll get the trilogy … Bottom line is, Oleksandr Usyk won the fight. On my scorecard it was the same as the judges [by] four or five rounds,” Carl Froch stated

“I had it a little bit closer. Usyk initiated almost everything in the fight and Tyson had to react. Usyk was the one that was working to a plan, Tyson was the one that was having to try to deal with one. Yes, it was close, I don’t think the scorecards were like that. But I understand that Usyk did a great job. At times, I’d say Tyson looked more fragile out of the two when the shots were landing either way.

“Tyson was the one that was more hesitant, Tyson was the one that just had a lot more reacting to do. Frank was saying he thought Tyson won. That’s being a promoter. There’s no way in a million years he thought Tyson won. “The best man won on the night and got the job done,” Johnny Nelson said

More Reaction

“The judges got it right. I don’t understand all these people talking about robbery. From the sixth round on Usyk does what he usually does. He had a bad fifth round and what does he do? [And] he responds. He finds a way to win. For me he won six straight rounds. I gave the last round to Fury. There were some rounds where Fury tried to steal the rounds in spots and I wasn’t sure how the judges would go,” Atlas stated
