Pros Praise Gervonta Davis’ KO Win Over Frank Martin – ‘Man Is A Killer’

Gervonta Davis knocked out Frank Martin in the eighth round to retain his WBA Lightweight Title, drawing a huge response.
Davis reminded everyone of his skills, following up on his last fight against Ryan Garcia. Tank had stopped Garica in round seven to become the ‘face of boxing.’ The fight had sold over 1.2 million PPVs. Davis then served time behind bars for breaking his house arrest conditions. On his return, he wanted to remind everyone of his skills against Garcia’s stablemate Martin. Frank was undefeated with an 18-0 record, with a good defense.
He was seen as Davis’ biggest threat, which would allow him to set up a future fight with Shakur Stevenson or Devin Haney. Both those boxers are known for having a slick style. Martin started the fight well, staying out of range and countering Davis. But the writing was on the wall once Tank backed up Martin on the ropes from round four onwards.
A left uppercut buzzed Martin as Tank followed up with another left to finish the fight. Ryan Garcia and Caleb Plant were some of the fighters in attendance to witness the event. After the win, Garcia praised Davis for the win, as he wanted a rematch. Meanwhile, even Errol Spence Jr. gave Davis his props. This was after the two exchanged verbals as Spence picked Martin to win.
Reaction
“Just a little crusty, little rusty, but it’s ok, I’m back. No, no, his footwork wasn’t bothering me. I knew that he was going to tire out. That’s why I was just standing there, be a target for him just so that he could tire himself out. Once he tired himself out, I started picking him apart. Most importantly, I just want to get back to the drawing board, get back in the gym. Just stay focused. I felt that I was a little rusty, but all those guys [Vasyl Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson and Isaac Cruz] are on my radar,” Davis said
“I felt like in the beginning I was in control, but then got a little too comfortable. [And] I got comfortable chilling on the ropes, trying to find that bigger shot, but when it wasn’t presenting itself, I stopped doing my movement. Once I stopped doing my movement, he was able to land more shots. Once I stopped doing my thing, He got all the more shots on me,” Martin revealed
” I like to see great fighters in the ring doing their best, even if sometimes they fall short. As a boxing fan, it’s thrilling to watch Davis’s power and agility. Life in the ring can be uncertain; one moment you’re on top, and the next moment you’re not. It’s about keeping going. Even in his loss, Martin demonstrated why he’s one of the sport’s brightest up-and-coming talents,” Spence stated
