Poirier Still Confident About McGregor’s UFC Return

Dustin Poirier has not given up hope of fans seeing Conor McGregor return to the UFC.

Poirier and McGregor have a long history, having faced each other three times. Poirier lost their first clash before avenging those defeats with two back-to-back wins. He defeated McGregor in the Irishman’s last fight at UFC 264 in 2021. He stopped McGregor as the latter broke his leg, which has kept him out of action since then. McGregor’s attempts at making a comeback have failed miserably. He was scheduled to face Michael Chandler last year at UFC 303, but he ended up pulling out after breaking his toe.

McGregor’s Woes

McGregor was also found guilty in a civil sexual lawsuit that was filed by Nikita Hand, which has also derailed his comeback plans. The Irishman still has two files left on his UFC contract, meaning that he cannot simply go and pursue other ventures without the backing of the UFC. McGregor has spoken consistently about his desire to enter into boxing. Once again, reports linked him with an exhibition against Logan Paul in India that could have earned him $250 million. However, the fight never happened, with suggestions that McGregor is simply tied to the UFC.

McGregor has also spoken about his aspirations of fighting in BKFC. McGregor is a part-owner of the organization. He recently had a face off against Jeremy Stephens following the latter’s victory over Eddie Alvarez. But any chances of the BKFC fight happening soon are slim, as once again the UFC would have to be on board. McGregor is still desperate to make a return to the fight game, meaning that all hope is not lost. Poirier has consistently said that he wants to retire after having one more fight. He has spoken about his desire to have it in his hometown of Louisiana.

Poirier On McGregor

There is a narrative in place for McGregor to face Poirier once again, as he has spoken about avenging his losses. He also infamously said this is not over following the last Poirier loss, feeling that he was making inroads into the fight before he broke his leg. That would earn Poirier a massive payday before he walks away from the sport, ending one of the most fierce rivalries. Poirier was asked whether he believed MacGregor would return. The Diamond believed he would do so, simply because McGregor cannot stay away from the spotlight.

“I was his last two fights. That was years ago, and he still hasn’t fought. I just think he’s one of those guys who is addicted to the limelight. He just wants to be in the mix, and on social media. Maybe he does come back, but I just think that he has an addiction to the light.

“Look, I love to talk trash on Conor, but if anybody can put it together and come back [it would be him]. If he can find that passion, and that fire and put it together, this guy can. I’m not saying anybody [can], but this guy can. He’s special, and he has something special. But only he knows when he looks in the mirror if he can really do it again,” Dustin said
