Poirier Hints At His Future – ‘Big News Coming Soon’
Dustin Poirier has hinted that his future will become clearer as doubts remain over whether he will continue fighting.
Poirier suggested he could retire following his defeat against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302. He suffered a fifth-round submission loss, as he missed out on the UFC Lightweight Title. It was a difficult moment since Poirier missed out on the lightweight title before. A loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in 2019 and a loss to Charles Oliveira at UFC 269 in 2021 also followed. Justin Gaethje then knocked out the Diamond at UFC 291 as he missed out on the BMF Title.
After the Islam loss, Dustin was clear that he would consider his future and whether it was right to continue fighting without a title shot. He has mentioned other fights, such as against Michael Chandler, Conor McGregor, or Nate Diaz.
Poirier’s Future
However, McGregor and Chandler are expected to fight once The Notorious returns from injury. He pulled out of their UFC 303 clash with a broken toe. Meanwhile, Diaz has not fought since UFC 279, when he beat Tony Ferguson. Regardless, Poirer’s future will become clearer soon after he claims he will have a retirement fight.
“Big news coming soon. Uno más,” Poirier posted
There is the possibility of running things back with Gaethje. The Highlight does not have a fight scheduled. He is coming off a KO loss to Max Holloway at UFC 300, which resulted in his loss of his BMF title. Meanwhile, Charles Oliveira has also not fought since losing to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300. While he has already beaten Poirier, it is a big, lucrative fight that could present Dustin with a final goodbye.
Dustin’s Options
There are many ventures possible for Dustin. He currently has his Good Fight Foundation, which he uses to give back to his community in Louisiana. The Foundation is used to sell merchandise from his fight, the proceeds of which are invested in various areas such as healthcare, food and school supply drives.
He recently revealed that Khabib spent $30,000 to buy the kit he wore against Makhachev. Poirier has even hinted before that he would be open to boxing. The Diamond is known for being one of the best strikers in the UFC. A crossover fight will also likely earn him more money than the UFC, given his massive fanbase, meaning the possibilities are endless.
“A boxing match? Of course [that would excite me]. Of course. Just a change of speed, a different training camp, just something different. I’ve been doing MMA for a while, and I still love the training camps and I love fighting. But to go to purely boxing, the training camp would be a lot less wearing on the body. No wrestling, no jiu-jitsu, it would be boxing, running, swimming. That would be fun stuff. I would box Nate [Diaz], I would box Nate. Either [MMA or boxing works for me] but I would rather [fight] Nate in boxing,” Poirier stated
