Plants Eyes Canelo And Berlanga Fights
Caleb Plant is targeting a rematch with Canelo Alvarez, provided he beats Trevor McCumby.
Plant boxes on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga card on September 14 during Mexican Independence Weekend. It was his first fight since losing a unanimous decision against David Benavidez last year. The fight is for the WBA Interim Super Middleweight Title, making the winner mandatory for the winner of Canelo-Berlanga. Plant has boxed Canelo before in 2021.
The build-up was marred by mass controversy after Canelo reacted angrily to Plant’s behaviour. Caleb used the ‘F Word’ against the Mexican. Caleb then tried to slap Canelo during their face-off. Alvarez moved out of the way before countering to cut Plant under his eye. Alvarez made Plant pay by stopping him in the 11th round. After the fight, they showed mutual respect towards each other. But Plant wants a crack at revenge.
Plant On Canelo
“With the WBA interim [168-lb] title on the line and [regular super middleweight champion] David Morrell moving up to 175, there’s a good chance the winner [of Trevor McCumby-Plant fight], me, being elevated to WBA ‘regular’ champ. Canelo has a WBA World title. So, if you can do the math on that, it’s going to put me in a good spot. Right now, my full attention is on the task in front of me [McCumby],” Plant said
The Canelo fight reportedly earned Plant a $10 million purse. That is the biggest payday the American will have seen. He was the IBF Super Middleweight Champion in that fight, as Alvarez unified. While he may not have a belt to his name, the other fights in the division are not as big. Plant has been building up possible bouts against Jermall Charlo and Berlanga. Plant infamously slapped Charlo at the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford weigh-in.
Plant On Berlanga
He accused Charlo of disrespecting him in front of his wife after claiming Charlo pulled his beard. Plant and Berlanga also had a verbal confrontation during Canelo’s presser for his fight with Berlanga. Those fights would generate decent purses, but they are not the legacy-defining fights Plant is looking for. However, if Berlanga pulls off a shock win against Canelo, Plant will fancy his chances. Plant is focused on getting that Berlanga fight.
“Canelo will go out there and do his thing. I don’t feel like [Berlanga will come close to beating Alvarez]. He doesn’t have the boxing skills, IQ, or chin. That’s a recipe for disaster, but let him prove us wrong and show what he can do. I don’t care how he does.
“I am focused on my fight. Berlanga is on the list of guys I would like to fight. Right now I am just focused on Trevor. This is his moment. This is his chance. I need to put all of my effort and energy into that. “I’ll be here at 168 pounds for some time; probably until I retire,” Plant stated
