Plant Accuses Berlanga Of Avoiding Him - 'We Sent Him The Contract'

Caleb Plant has hit out at Edgar Berlanga for not wanting to face off against him.

Reports indicate that Plant is scheduled to have a fight on May 31 as the former IBF Super Middleweight Champion is in search of an opponent. Plant secured a victory against Trevor McCumby in his last fight with a stoppage win. He has been linked with the Berlanga fight after their initial confrontation at the Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo weigh in. Berlanga would eventually go on to fight Canelo, coming up short in a unanimous decision loss. However, he bounced back from that defeat against Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in his last fight with a stoppage win. Berlanga’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, suggested that Plant would be a good name for his next opponent.

“I expect to be working with Edgar Belanga again, and I think we can deliver in big fights. [And] I like the Caleb Plant fight. I think that’s a brilliant fight. Two guys that are going to really spice it up at a press conference, two great fighters [and] two great 168-pounders,” Hearn said

But Balanga has also been eyeing fights against Jermall Charlo and Jaime Munguia. Those fights have big commercial value. Charlo is the former WBC Middleweight Champion, while Munguia is a world-level opponent, although they may be weaker in opposition. Charlo has not boxed since 2023, while Munguia is coming off a loss. Plant revealed that he had sent an offer to Berlanga, but his team has not come back with a response. He has now questioned whether Berlanga wants to face him.

Plant On Berlanga

“We sent him the contract. We’re about to see in a day or two. Just stay tuned, but it ain’t going to be him. He don’t want to fight me. If he a free agent? Is he free to go where he wants? If he free to fight whoever he wants? Here I am. So, there you go. Spank his a**,” Plant said

A fight against Plant makes sense for various reasons. There is enough of a demand to see it, given that it would sell out due to the feud. Plant is also the WBA Interim Super Middleweight Champion. A victory against Plant puts Berlanga in a position to rematch Canelo at some point down the line. Canelo is expected to become undisputed again when he faces William Scull for the latter’s IBF Super Middleweight Title, after which he will fight Terence Crawford in September.

Berlanga has been calling for the Canelo rematch, feeling he had shown enough to warrant it. While he lost a one-sided unanimous decision, he did get off the canvas to show a lot of heart. Berlanga also knows that the Canelo fight is a bout that will secure him another big payday. A fight against Plant is also one of the biggest names on his resume. However, Berlanga will have to decide if it is a risk worth taking, as a loss would derail his career.
