PBC Talks Up Spence Vs. Fundora - 'See How He Performs At 154'

PBC spokesperson Tim Smith has given his take on a potential Errol Spence Jr. vs. Sebastian Fundora fight.

Spence has not been in the ring since losing to Terence Crawford last year. He was dropped three times before the fight was stopped in round nine. The rematch never happened as Crawford moved up to 154. Bud secured a unanimous decision win against Israil Madrimov as he won the WBA Junior Middleweight Title. Spence is also campaigning at 154.

After Fundora beat Tim Tszyu, Spence got in the ring to call for that fight. Fundora holds the WBO and WBC belts at 154. They were linked with a fight in October, although reports indicate it could be pushed back further. If Spence comes victorious, he sets up a possible unification with Crawford. Smith talked up Spence’s return, saying there were many things to ponder over the fighter’s return.

Spence’s Return

“That’s an intriguing fight to me, just to see how Errol comes back after that loss to [Terence] Crawford, see how he performs at 154 pounds. We’ve got to see who his trainer’s going to be and whether that trainer will tweak his style or work with the style that he already has,” Smith said

There are also various question marks over Spence. After the Crawford loss, he underwent cataract surgery on his right eye. The Truth felt this was the reason why he came unstuck, as he was repeatedly hit. This came after Spence recovered from two car crashes. He also split from his long-time trainer, Derrick James, after the Crawford loss.

James has sued Spence after reports that the fighter did not pay him what he was due from the Crawford fight. Spence has further indicated that he is looking beyond boxing. He has Frank Martin signed to his management company. Spence was on hand to promote him for his fight with Gervonta Davis. Despite Martin getting stopped, Spence admitted that he enjoyed the promotional aspect of the fight game.

Spence’s Future

“But I like the promoter side. I feel like it might be my calling a little bit, being a promoter and looking at the young guys coming up and helping them get to the top of their level, because that’s where we at right now. He [Martin]’s at the top right now, and once he’s at the top, you’re the man,” Spence said

But before that happens, Spence must deal with Fundora.

“I was really impressed with Fundora in the Tszyu fight because Fundora, for all of his height, he used to always fight inside,” Smith said. “But in that fight, with the cut and everything, he was able to use his height and keep Tim Tszyu at a distance. I thought I would never see that guy use his height. Is he going to go back to being an inside fighter if he fights Spence, or does he use his distance, does he use his height? That’s a really intriguing fight if that comes to fruition,” Smith added
