Paul vs Tyson Confirmed As A Pro Bout

Jake Paul will box Mike Tyson in a pro fight after getting approval from the boxing commission in Texas.

The two will face off on July 20, live on Netflix. Tyson’s last pro fight was in 2005, getting stopped by Kevin McBride. Tyson returned to the ring in 2020, earning a drawing with Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition. Paul is in his best form, having stopped two pro boxers back-to-back. He defeated Andre August and Ryan Bourland via first-round KOs. There were concerns over whether the fight would be a pro bout. Tyson referred to it as an exhibition and then a fight. Paul clarified those comments, stating work was being done to make it a pro-fight.

Paul vs Tyson

“This is called an exhibition, but if you look up exhibition, you won’t see any of the laws we’re fighting under. This is a fight. I don’t think he’s faster than me. I’ve seen a YouTube video of him at [age] 16 doing weird dancing. That’s not the guy I’m fighting. This is a guy who’s really going to try and hurt me, which I’m accustomed to, and he’s going to be greatly mistaken. Right now, I’m scared to death. As the fight gets closer, the less nervous I become because it’s reality, and in reality I’m invincible,” Tyson said

“Yeah man, it’s so annoying. People on the internet will believe anything they see or hear. There’s been so much misinformation, we know this more than anyone. Mike and I want this to be a pro fight, with full face shots. We’re submitting that request to the commission. It’s an all-out war. There’s been all these fake videos about not being able to hit each other, big gloves, all that stuff. It’s all, as [Donald] Trump would say, fake news,” Paul stated

Now, the news is official.

Tyson Reacts

Tyson has taken drastic steps to get his first win. He has been training three times a day to get in the best shape. There are worries that the three-decade age gap could hinder Tyson. He will be 58 by the time of the fight against Paul, who is 28. Tyson is also known for smoking weed. He reportedly spends $40,000 a month on the substance.

The boxer also owns a company which sells weed. Tyson 2.0 is a US-based company which sells products in 24 states. While Tyson has stated that weed brings him ‘inner peace,’ he will have to do without the substance. He has banned weed and sex to prepare for this fight. Tyson infamously admitted that he took cocaine before boxing. Reporter Jon Swaine recalled Tyson’s prior comments in the boxer’s autobiography, Undisputed Truth.

“[Tyson] said that he was high before taking to the ring for a match against Lou Savarese in Glasgow in June 2000—and came up with an ingenious method to prevent detection by the sport’s official testers. Confessing he had taken “blow” and “pot” before the bout, he said: “I had to use my whizzer, which was a fake penis where you put in someone’s clean urine to pass your drug test,” Swaine stated
