Parker Beats Wilder Convincingly, Putting AJ Fight In Doubt

Joseph Parker shocked the boxing world with a comprehensive decision win over Deontay Wilder as an Anthony Joshua fight appears in doubt.

Parker’s plan nullified Wilder’s right hand, leaving the Bronze Bomber short of ideas. The former WBO heavyweight champion stood in the centre, slowly moving forward with his footwork. Wilder boxed on the outside with his jab in a cagey first three rounds. But it was Parker who landed right hands near the end of each to take them.

In the fourth, Parker’s plan of jabbing when he moved inside, ducking low followed by a right over the top, was working. Wilder was behind on the scorecards, but he failed to find the right hand. He did have some success in round nine, as his right hand brushed Parker on the top of the head. Wilder landed an uppercut in the tenth, which Parker took. With time running out, Wilder needed a stoppage. It never looked likely as Parker won it on the scorecards unanimously: 118-111, 118-110 and 120-107

“I want to say respect to Wilder, he’s a dangerous fighter. Tough fight, but we trained very hard for this. We were purely focused and had great momentum. Everyone had other plans, but this is God’s plan. I stayed calm, stayed relaxed, switched on for every second of every round. We got the win. Merry Christmas to us.

“I had to be aware at all times. He did catch me a few times on the guard, and I’ll tell you this, it’s a very hard right hand. If he landed clean, it would have been different, but today was my day. This is massive. This is the toughest opponent I’ve faced,” Parker

“He did a good job avoiding my punches. No excuses. It wasn’t my night. A lot has calmed me down, I’ve found a lot of peace in my life, I’ve found a lot of love. Win lose or draw I’ma keep my smile on my face. If you come up short here, you keep going,” Wilder
