Ortiz Jr. Ready To Hurt Bohachuk – ‘I Am Still One Of The Best’
Vergil Ortiz Jr. will box Serhii Bohachuk for the WBC Interim Junior Middleweight Belt on August 10.
Ortiz was scheduled to face Tim Tszyu on the Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov card on August 3. Tszyu pulled out after the cut he sustained in the Sebastian Fundora fight failed to heal. It was a massive chance to fight on Riyadh Season’s first card overseas.
While Ortiz could have faced another opponent on the same card, he will now box on another date. Ortiz moved up to welterweight after he struggled with the weight cut. Ortiz fainted three days before his fight with Eimantas Stanionis due to dehydration. Once he was hospitalized, he decided to move to junior middleweight.
Ortiz’s Health
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our fighters, and we of course support Vergil’s decision 100 percent. This unfortunate event does however open the door for one of Golden Boy’s top prospects, Floyd Schofield, to accelerate his profile by headlining in his home state of Texas. We will, as always, put on a high-action card from top to bottom on July 8 and look forward to showcasing all of our fighters both in San Antonio and on DAZN,” Golden Boy Promotions revealed
Since his move up from 147 after struggling to make the weight, Ortiz has had two fights. He stopped Fredrick Lawson and Thomas Dulorme in first-round knockouts, leaving him with little ring experience in the division. Bohachuk is a dangerous opponent. He has a 24-1 record, with 23 knockouts. His last defeat was against Brandon Adams in 2021. Bohachuk enters into the fight with a unanimous decision win against Brian Mendoza, giving him his biggest career win. But he faces a knockout artist in Ortiz, who has stopped all his opponents. Ortiz was ready for the challenge.
Ortiz vs. Bohachuk
“This fight is the fight that solidifies me as a top 154 fighter. This is also the fight that shows everyone that nothing has changed: I am still one of the best fighters in the world,” Ortiz said
“I fought hard to win the WBC Interim world title and now I am looking to defend this title for my goal of becoming the ultimate world champion. I know Vergil Ortiz, he is a very tough competitor, but on August 10 I will show that I am the best in the division,” Bohachuk stated
Victory for either fighter puts them in a strong position for their next fight. Terence Crawford will box Israil Madrimov for the WBA Junior Middleweight Title. Meanwhile, Sebastian Fundora holds the WBO and WBC Junior Middleweight Titles. He has been linked with a fight against Errol Spence Jr. However, there has been no official announcement yet. The winner between Ortiz and Bohachuk could target a mega unification fight in their next bout. They are all big hitters, so fans can expect an entertaining clash. But before that can happen, Ortiz and Bohachuk cannot afford to overlook this next fight.
