O’Malley Wants Haney In MMA; Haney Says Let’s Box
Sean O’Malley wants to fight Devin Haney in MMA after their social media feud.
O’Malley has previously hinted at the idea of entering boxing when he stopped Aljamain Sterling to become the UFC Bantamweight Champion. In his post-fight comments, he called out Gervonta Davis for a boxing bout. Davis’ trainer said it would not be wise of him. Ryan Garcia also backed up those comments, as Suga then turned his attention towards King Ryan. Neither of those fights came to fruition. O’Malley and Haney have fired verbal shots at each other on social media following O’Malley’s defeat against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306.
O’Malley was headlining the first-ever event at The Sphere during Mexican Independence Weekend. Sugar looked far from his best, as Merab dominated by putting him on the ground several times. He would eventually win a unanimous decision to become the new bantamweight champion. O’Malley confirmed that he would take a break from the sport and will reportedly undergo surgery in October over an injury. Haney did not show any sympathy as he slammed O’Malley’s performance. Now, there is a narrative in place to potentially have a fight.
O’Malley vs. Haney
Haney has not fought since losing to Ryan Garcia in April. Ryan dropped him three times on his way to a majority decision win. But the result was overturned into a no contest after Garcia failed VADA tests for Ostarine. Garcia was banned for a year while Haney regrouped to see where he would go next. Haney is back in training, and reports indicate that he’s looking to fight in December. O’Malley would welcome an MMA fight, while Haney wants it in boxing.
“If Devin Haney wants to talk… if he really wants to fight, I’ll put a million dollars on me vs. him, no time limit, and we can fight. MMA rules, just a fight. Or we can do no rules, if you wanna..eye poke me you can. Do a real …fight. If you want to talk…on Twitter, we can really, really actually fight,” O’Malley said
“I don’t fight for a million dollars like you.. @SugaSeanMMA let’s do a boxing fight & give us a shot at making real money,” Haney stated
O’Malley On White
Outside of that, Suga has welcomed the possibility of Dana White entering boxing. The CEO of the UFC has been linked with the sport throughout the years. He helped put on Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor in a fight that earned the Irishman a reported $100 million. The fight was a success, and McGregor was praised for going ten rounds with one of the best.
In 2018, there was speculation that White could develop Zuffa Boxing, which would have marked his entry into the sport. That never happened, but the conversation of White’s foray into boxing has now been brought up again. The Saudis want to make a combat sports league. This could mirror the UFC model, where it is centralized and the best fighters face each other. O’Malley has welcomed that.
“That’s exciting. Me vs. Merab in boxing? Jokes. But that’s…exciting. I feel like I have five, six more good years in me. If the UFC is going to do something with boxing, I would love to. [fight]. That would be so fun. I love MMA. I love the wrestling aspect of MMA, I really do, I think it makes fighting so much sweeter,” O’Malley added
