Ohara Davies has officially signed with Golden Boy Promotions.
The Brit is the current top contender for the WBA junior welterweight belt, as he is line to face Rolando Romero as a mandatory.
However, the WBA had recently confirmed that the purse bids which were meant for July 24th, 2023, were postponed.
This was on the basis of Romero’s team submitting some medical information that required further investigation.
“Romero’s team presented a medical report which is being analyzed by our medical committee members. For that reason, WBA Championships Committee has decided to postpone [the purse bid] until further notice,” Romero
And yet, with Golden Boy behind him, Davies will be in a better position to secure a title shot.
After all, Romero is looking for a fight with Ryan Garcia. And since Garcia is with Golden Boy, there is a natural pathway for a Rolly-Garcia fight if he can beat Davies.
As such, the huge opportunity was welcomed by Davies.
“Golden Boy is up there with the biggest promotional companies in the world of boxing, so I’m over the moon to sign a promotional deal with them.
“Also, to work with Oscar De la Hoya who was one of my childhood boxing heroes is great, and to be able to link up and win my first world title under him as my promoter is amazing.
“I’m going to be looking to make a statement and knock Rolly Romero out. From then on, I’ll be looking for the biggest names possible and being signed with Oscar De La Hoya. I believe they will deliver on that,” Davies
Much in the same way, Golden Boy were keen on exposing Davies to a larger American audience.
After all, Davies had faded somewhat following his losses to Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall.
“We are in the business of making world champions, and we will make Ohara Davies one of them under our promotional family. He has the grit, determination and bad blood against Romero to fuel him as he campaigns for the WBA world title very soon. Keep an eye out for him,” De La Hoya
