Nick Diaz confirmed he is not only sober but planning a return to the Octagon, with a view to becoming a world champion.

The 42-year-old, who spent much of 2025 in a recovery program in Mexico, made the comments after multiple fight cancellations in 2024. Diaz was meant to fight Vicente Luque at UFC Abu Dhabi in July 2024. The fight was postponed because of travel problems, but the rescheduled fight at UFC 310 never went ahead for undisclosed reasons.

Diaz admitted to a history of abusing marijuana and alcohol, stating that while he avoided “harder” drugs, the lifestyle around him had become increasingly dangerous and unsustainable. Diaz stated he was sober for three years before relapsing. Nick clarified that those close to him felt an intervention was the only way to save his life. Diaz proudly revealed that he fans will see him at the top again.

“I see myself becoming world champion. I see myself becoming world champion, and I think it’s easy money. It’s not like before. People are going to see a brand new me. For me, I just think that I wouldn’t have made it this far if I thought that there was something that could stop me. That being the next guy I’m standing in front of or any obstacle. Substance abuse, right or wrong, I’m just very confident that I’m going to do better every year, every day. I just want to thank my fans, supporters, and everybody that is going to be ready to tune in for my next upcoming fights. We’re going to win a world title,” Diaz said

Nick has revealed that he wants to face some of the biggest names in the sport. He outlined possible fights against UFC Welterweight Champion Islam Makhachev and UFC Middleweight Champion Khamzat Chimaev. Islam became a double champ by beating Jack della Maddalena to become the UFC Welterweight Champion. Meanwhile, Chimaev secured the middleweight belt with a unanimous decision victory against Dricus Du Plessis. While those are ambitious targets, Diaz fancied his chances.

“I wish they would just give me a title shot right away, but I have to fight for that. I don’t care. 185lbs or 170lbs, either weight. I could fight at 185lbs, but I’d like to fight at 170lbs. Yeah, or the other guy, [Khamzat] Chimaev,” Diaz added when asked if he wants to fight Islam Makhachev. I think I could beat both of them. I could lose, too, but I mean, I could see myself winning those fights. It’s just matchups and fighters. It’s coming in with the right formula and fighting the right fight,” Diaz stated
