Nick Diaz has officially returned to the gym after a series of health scares and a year-long sobriety milestone, sparking hope for a potential 2026 comeback.

Following a tough 2024—which saw a viral video of Diaz attempting to light grass on fire and subsequent withdrawal from a scheduled bout against Vicente Luque—Nick looks in better spirits. His longtime teammate and friend Jake Shields shared footage of the 42-year-old engaging in light “play” sparring and grappling. Diaz has also recently reached a sobriety milestone and completed a stint in rehab. That reflects the positive comments that Shields gave last year.

“A little play sparring with Nick Diaz this morning. Nick was my top sparring partner for over 15 years, so it’s good to get back together and train,” Sheilds stated

“He’s doing a lot better. I’m not going to get into anything personal with him, but he’s had some stuff going on for a little while, and it’s finally heading in the right direction. So, I’m hopeful for Nick because he’s a brother to me and one of my best friends.

“You know life is tough sometimes with ups and downs, and things can happen. Nick was dealing with something, and it’s heading in the right direction, which I haven’t felt that way in a long time,” Shields concluded. “I feel a lot better about the situation, but we’ll see. Time will tell. I’m so close to him, so it’s painful to watch him struggle with things, but I think he’s going to finally be better,” Shield said

And yet, Nick’s fighting future is uncertain. Diaz has not won a professional fight since 2011, and his last appearance was a TKO loss to Robbie Lawler in 2021. Despite this, former BMF champion Jorge Masvidal recently expressed interest in a fight against Diaz later this year.

“If Nick looks good and does his job, why not me and Nick? I’d love to fight Nick. It’s a classic fight. It’s a fight that I always wanted to do since I was at Strikeforce at 155 [pounds] and he was at 170. I was like, ‘Man, that’s a dude I would like to fight.’ Nothing personal, just because of his style. The way that he leaves it all out there. If I get a fight with Nick, it’ll be a blessing,” Masvidal said

Instead of risking his health in the cage, Nick’s return to the gym could be viewed as an opportunity to transition into a coaching role. By staying in the gym as a mentor, he can give back without the neurological risks of professional fighting. Nick Diaz has nothing left to prove. His greatest victory in 2026 shouldn’t be over an opponent in the cage, but rather the continued mastery of his own life and health.
