Ngannou Makes Big Changes Ahead Of His Fight With Joshua

Francis Ngannou has made changes to his training camp for the Anthony Joshua fight to give himself the best chance of coming out victorious.

For his first boxing fight against Tyson Fury, Ngannou enlisted the services of Mike Tyson. Iron Mike is a former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, showing he had the mentality to get to the top level. That had an impact on his performance against Fury as Ngannou defied expectations. He dropped the Gypsy King with a left hook in the third round and went the distance in a split-decision loss.

The decision was disputed, with some even giving Ngannou the win. As part of his training, ESPN reports that Ngannou will not be training at the Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. Instead, the MMA fighter has decided to base himself in Saudi Arabia to train there.

That seems a wise move as it will give Ngannou plenty of time to acclimate himself to the new surroundings and spend time out there to expand his profile. Ngannou will have Dewey Cooper in his corner. It needs to be clarified if Mike Tyson will help Ngannou again, but given that he opened a boxing gym in Saudi last year, that remains a possibility. Either way, Ngannou was ready for come what may.

Ngannou’s Trainer

“The fight gods, the gods of boxing, the gods of entertainment came together and made this [fight] happen. This wasn’t supposed to happen. … Now [Joshua] has no one to fight. Well, guess what? There’s someone that’ll fight him. There’s an MMA fighting champion that’ll fight him,” Cooper said

Despite that being the case, Eddie Hearn has backed Joshua to get to the very top. He is a former two-time unified heavyweight champion, showing he has what it takes at the elite level. He was linked with an undisputed fight with Deontay Wilder in 2018.

Hearn On Joshua

“I truly believe Anthony Joshua will become undisputed heavyweight champion. “Off the back of AJ vs Otto Wallin and Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou – you’re telling me you don’t fancy AJ against Fury?” Hearn added

Wilder’s camp made a $50 million offer, but since it had to be accepted before a contract was sent, the fight never got made. Joshua would then lose to Andy Ruiz Jr. and Usyk, while Wilder lost his belt to Fury. That prevented the fight from happening, but Joshua could still come out on top. There is a chance that the winner of Fury-Usyk retires after becoming undisputed. If that happens, the belts would become vacant, leaving Joshua with a chance again for undisputed.

Even if Joshua does not become undisputed, he has taken risks since he has arguably one of the best boxing resumes of the current heavyweights. He has managed to bounce back from the consecutive losses to Usyk to put himself in the conversation for a world title again. There is no getting away from that.
