Weidman Backs McGregor Return After UFC 329 Injury

UFC Hall of Famer Chris Weidman expects Conor McGregor to return from the ACL and meniscus tear that ended his comeback attempt nine seconds into the first round at UFC 329.

McGregor's right knee buckled after he landed awkwardly from a jumping kick attempt against Max Holloway earlier this month. The former two-division champion has since said his final fight will take place in 2027, with a trilogy bout against Holloway his preferred matchup once he recovers.

Weidman On McGregor's UFC Future

Speaking to MMA Junkie, the former middleweight champion said McGregor won't end his career on such a disappointing note. "It was such a letdown, the air just got stolen out of that building," Weidman recalled. "We did the desk show and I couldn't even talk anymore. He's not going out like that. He's fighting again, for sure."

Weidman acknowledged the level of excitement for a McGregor return might not match what fans felt heading into UFC 329. The Irish star believes he can make it back to the Octagon by summer 2027, though Holloway figures to compete at least once more before then.

McGregor blamed slippery canvas conditions from dry ice used during his walkout for contributing to the injury. Whether UFC brass will see value in booking the trilogy by late 2027 remains unclear.
